Hello, is it common to be coughing since conception? Not sure if I should go to the docs or not as it might be an infection.. anyone else had this?

Never heard of this... get yourself to the doctors

You've probably just caught a cough. I had a cough in 2nd trimester lasted bloody ages and did not help my already battered pelvic floor!

If you weren't pregnant would you just think it's a cough?

ZackPizzazz · 19/11/2018 11:13

Surely you just.. have a cough? They're not exactly rare at this time of year.

Winona1 · 19/11/2018 11:39

Thanks @overagain I wouldn't be worried if I wasn't pregnant but I read that a chest infection can effect the baby.

@ZackPizzazz excuse me for being concerned about my unborn child. I am 5 wks pregnant with my first so wanted some advice, thanks for your useless comment.

You're going to get coughs, colds and even chest infections. More so than you normally would, even, since you're mildly immunosuppressed. They won't do either of you any harm.

I'd definitely get to the doctor's if you think it could be a chest infection. Its normally quite easy to tell if its a "normal" cough or a chest infection though - with an infection you are likely to cough up green phlegm (gross, sorry!) and struggle breathing/feel wheezy. If you just have a dry tickly cough like with a regular cold I'd wait a good couple of weeks before seeing the Dr.

Bear in mind also that you can't take lots of the usual drugs for a cough when pregnant - no lemsip/anticongestents etc. You pretty much have to stick to paracetamol and non medical stuff. I found hot water with lemon & honey to be great...

Ignore people's sarcastic comments - being pregnant for the first time is so stressful and I worried over (and then googled) every little thing so I totally get it. Once the first trimester is out of the way I really felt I could enjoy my pregnancies more and relax a bit!!! x

Most coughs are viral, so there's not much anyone can do for them. Even if it's bacterial (so would respond to antibiotics) there's usually no need to take antibiotics. Antibiotics are also a risk to the unborn baby, as even ones considered 'safe' in pregnancy pose some risk (all medications do, pregnant or not).

Personally, if it hasn't lasted more than 4 weeks and any other symptoms if an illness have gone then I'd just wait it out. If you are actually ill then I'd see the GP after 2 weeks (a normal cold jasts 7-10days) if you aren't getting better.

I contacted a chest infection during the summer, was about 20 or so weeks pregnant. It was absolutely horrendous and really knocked me, probably didn't help I also had Hypremesis!

Doctor just prescribed Amoxocillin and it completely cleared up after about 10days.

Hope you feel better soon!

Thank you everyone for your helpful comments. I am sipping on honey and lemon as we speak, hoping it clears soon! @MonkeyToucher thanks for your lovely comment, I miscarried earlier in the year so feel I need to be extra cautious this time around even if I do sound silly 😂 xx
