Up feeling poorly and bored and curious if we're allowed them in pregnancy?

I had one the other day and realised I may not be allowed it after id finished the last mouthful.

Anyway the Christmas version of reindeer malteaser advert keeps come up and I wanna know if I can have it 🙈

Seriously? Why wouldn't you be allowed one? Confused

PBobs · 16/11/2018 03:21

I read somewhere that you shouldn't eat soft serve as it's just the right temp for listeria and the equipment may not always be thoroughly cleaned and might harbour listeria.

NHS though (who I trust) says: "Soft ice creams should be fine to eat when you're pregnant, as they are processed products made with pasteurised milk and eggs, so any risk of salmonella food poisoning has been eliminated."

Australian guidelines say definitely no to soft serve ice cream: www.foodauthority.nsw.gov.au/foodsafetyandyou/life-events-and-food/pregnancy/foods-to-eat-or-avoid-when-pregnant

@purpleunicorns it's just the soft ice cream as said above that's the mixed reviews.

🤞🏼 I'm not in Australia!! Woooo

I would ask for the toppings without the soft serve. All the good stuff without the blah.

costacoffeecup · 16/11/2018 04:31

There have been many threads on this, mcflurries are FINE. Something to do with them keeping the machines so clean. Crack on!

Theweasleytwins · 16/11/2018 04:44

I read you arent supposed to have them either

Think mcdonalds have a strict cleaning policy though?

AuntMarch · 16/11/2018 07:01

The risk of most of these things is tiny. I'm following guidelines but fully expect at some point I'll have something I shouldn't without even realising.
But it's mostly only because of increased risk of bacteria compared to other products - you're no more likely to get sick from it than you were before you were pregnant, it could just be more dangerous if you did become ill. Or at least that's my understanding of it. Still makes sense to avoid risk where you can, but no need to panic.

GroundhogWeek · 16/11/2018 07:12

From McDonalds I personally wouldn’t worry as I believe they have good cleaning practises. An iffy looking van or kiosk I might think twice about though.

mumofmunchkin · 16/11/2018 09:29

Personally I would avoid soft serve from ice cream vans as I don't know how they clean the machines, but would happily eat it from McD's as their cleaning is so good.

As someone else said, it's not that soft serve is inherently dangerous, it's that it carries a risk of food poisoning. The risk of food poisoning isn't greater than if you weren't pregnant, it's just that the impact could be much more serious. If you ate it and didn't get ill, then all is fine.

My midwife told me last week to avoid 'whippy' ice cream which includes McFlurries. Best not risk it.

Yakadee · 16/11/2018 16:29

Does this help?

I've been told to avoid Mr whippy but told mcflurry's are fine. I've had one x

@PBobs wow those Australia rules seem extreme!! No ham/chicken slices etc, no bags salad?! There's loads on there that's a No!! We're moving to Australia in a year or so, glad to be having babies in the UK just for those rules alone haha.

OP, I spoke to my midwife about this when I was pregnant in the height of summer before! She said go for it haha, it would be the cleanliness of the machines but McDs are very strict xx

babyp160 · 16/11/2018 17:49

I'll go for it! Bring On the reindeers!!! Xx
