Just wanted to know your opinions,

I was told that it was very good for mother to eat placenta after giving birth because its rich in the nutrients that help you recover?
was also told that the hospital offers to cook if for you?

Just wanted to know opinions and experiances for me to make up my mind whether or not i should(not sure about the thought but apparently tastes very good)

I think it would just feel and taste like ordinary meat. I am sure that if you ate it without knowing what it was, it would be quite straightforward.

The thing is that once you know what it is, then that changes things - at least for me. But it is all mental. I hope I haven't put you off or anything! I personally find the idea out of my comfort zone which is probably why it is funny to me, but I have googled and it seems that a lot of other cultures do it.

Please don't go for the onion gravy though unless you fry some bacon to go with it!

EEWWWWW!!!! Yeah by all means have a look at it and give it a poke if you want, but after that, get them to chuck it out!

Why would you want to bring it home in a bag and then dig a hole in the garden for it then to sliver out of the bag into, plant a sappling on top of it and then the foxes to dig it up and eat it??!!!

Gross!!

As for eating it, dont even go there!!!

obviously some people have really strong views about this

at the end of the day,it is your choice, your placenta

don;t feel you shouldn;t do it because other people ridicule the idea

you won;t be the first woman to do it, and you won;t be the last

bilblio · 20/06/2007 16:03

My friend and our DP's had this discussion a while ago. My friend is pregnant too, her husband is a chef and my DP is a foodie. They were trying to decide on the best ways to cook it.

I'm a veggie and my friend doesn't eat red meat so should we be eating it anyway? After all nothing has died to produce it.

I should point out that the boys were quite drunk at the time, and I've just shown DP the link and he doesn't seem quite as enthusiastic

err...'chinky' ?

when did that become acceptable parlance? sounds pretty racist to me actually.Care to answer, Wilkie?

donnie · 21/06/2007 14:05

'chinky' - would you say 'nigger' food?

donnie · 21/06/2007 14:06

for apos read quoatation marks.

donnie · 21/06/2007 14:35

have reported that post to MNHQ

willow2 · 21/06/2007 14:38

Isn't chinky just short-hand for Chinese food? Like Jap is for Japanese?

donnie · 21/06/2007 14:39

err yes willow - like paki for pakistani you mean? nice....or nigger for negro?

Yes, but I don't say I'm going for a Paki when I want a curry and I don't say I'm going for a nigger when I want a roti.

willow2 · 21/06/2007 14:50

To clarify, I don't use those words in any situation.

donnie · 21/06/2007 14:50

then why say I'm going for a chinky ?

donnie · 21/06/2007 14:50

why is one acceptable and the others not?

Mercy · 21/06/2007 14:53

It's because the word can be used as a derogatory comment/ racist term too.

It's not really shorthand

willow2 · 21/06/2007 14:53

I have no idea - just making the point that it is a widely used shorthand. You are no doubt absolutely right.

willow2 · 21/06/2007 14:56

For example, here's AA Gill at it...

The popular prejudices about Chinky takeaways make it difficult to improve the quality and sophistication of the dishes, or to charge more.

lilylilyrose · 21/06/2007 14:56

I've heard that eating a bit of the placenta can help with postpartum bleeding - something to do with the hormones? I googled but can't find any links to back that theory up...

donnie · 21/06/2007 14:57

I give up.

Mercy · 21/06/2007 14:57

He's being ironic, surely?

willow2 · 21/06/2007 15:09

I totally get the point you are making - but it does seem to be seen by many as acceptable when the other examples I've given are so obviously not. Odd really.

tiredemma · 21/06/2007 15:11

Ive just found a disney song with that word in.

Mercy · 21/06/2007 15:16

Willow, yes I know what you mean

Tiredemma - really? Where?

tiredemma · 21/06/2007 15:19

I dont really want to link it mercy in case I get flamed for doing so.

Google that word and disney
