Can you have a silent miscarriage once you've seen a heatbeat?

Hi All,
Sorry if this is a stupid question but I'm winding myself up thinking round and round in my head.

How common are silent miscarriages once you've seen a heartbeat? I can only find stats on miscarriages as a whole.

The background is that I had a MMC earlier this year at 6 weeks. I'm now 10+4 and have seen the heartbeat twice - once at the EPU after some spotting at 7+3 and once at a reassurance scan at 8+6.

I haven't felt as sick/heartburny the last couple of days and I'm worried it's because things are going wrong despite no bleeding, only minor cramps (but having read what's going on inside that should be no surprise).

I'm away with my sister next week so will have to tell her, and some stupid part of my brain thinks that telling someone before 12 weeks will jinx things...we haven't told anyone thus far (I apparently have become a very convincing liar)...

Can anyone talk me down/point me in the way of some stats that will help?!

Tia x

Unfortunately yes, from experience, had a mmc at 12 weeks having previously seen the heartbeat. 😥 but I think it's good to have a few v close people knowing, as support will be needed should the worst happen. Fingers crossed for u, can u book yourself a private scan to give u reassurance? After my miscarriages they scanned me every 2 weeks to give me reassurance, see if that could be an option for u. Hope everything goes well for u x

Saying this won’t help you at all, but yes you can definitely have a missed MC after seeing heartbeat. We had an early scan at 8/9 weeks and it was gone by 12. Absolutely devastating. Saying that I’m sure it would be very unusual to happen twice. Being as worried as you are is totally normal. I couldn’t settle myself until baby was in my arms. Not sure about any facts or figures but obviously I’m sure you know that after one miscarriage you’re no more likely to have a second than if you hadn’t had it at all.

It’s so so unlikely, 2% according to the miscarriage association. Try not to symptom spot, your hormones and body are changing every day.

It did happen to me after seeing a heartbeat but I went on to have my 10 month old who is sleeping soundly in his cot now.

I wish you all the best ❤️

Oh bugger. OK thanks all. Good to know that it's possible rather than endlessly wondering, although to be honest I was hoping the answer would be no, you'd know about it with bleeding/cramping/other.

Thank you for sharing your stories with me Flowers

I'm away from tomorrow until next Sunday and then the 12 week scan is the Thursday after that so will just have to try and not worry about it for now.

I don't think I've ever particularly considered myself an anxious person until now...!! The midwife was, I think, quite surprised when I said my mental health was usually fine...!

Your symptoms tend to ease up/ change once the placenta starts doing more between 8-12 weeks. Symptoms come and go, so just like when ttc, you can't really trust them.

I remembered how stressed I was between week 8 when I had a man early scan and week 13 when I had my first NHS scan. I was googling statistics and checking the miscarriage probability chart all the time.

I don’t know how our grandmothers and generations before coped with the worry.

kingofthemountains · 16/11/2018 18:19

@AnguaUberwaldIronfoundersson yep yep and yep.

I think it would be kinder if you didn't find out until much later but then that would be no good as you have to look after yourself etc etc.

Stomach still sore but trying to forget about the whole thing until the scan!

We'll pregnancy was often not discovered until 8-12 weeks back and then. As reliable home pregnancy tests only came on the market in the 70s and were very expensive. A pregnancy test via the GP could only be done from 6 weeks and took at least a week to come back due to how they worked (it involved animal testing). So by the time they found out they were much less likely to miscarry and most miscarriages went unnoticed as missing a period or being late is pretty normal throughout a lifetime anyway.

Fingers crossed for you OP.

Sadly yes. I had a “strong” heartbeat on two scans and then had a missed miscarriage where the heart stopped at 13 weeks.

I think it's much more common in the early weeks before you hear the heartbeat though, so I would try to just focus on being relaxed and enjoying pregnancy.

lelrx · 16/11/2018 20:10

I have been panicking about this and had a reassurance scan today at 11+2 but measured at 12 weeks only a few days before my hospital scan, I haven't had any spotting only cramping in my back and pelvis the last few days and lack of symptoms, my first pregnancy so I was petrified something was going wrong, I've been so anxious I just couldn't wait, I was worried I would go to my app on Tuesday and there would be no heartbeat but to my relief everything is perfect baby is fine and we got to hear heartbeat, I can't tell you not to panic because I am a nightmare but have some faith, hearing the heartbeat twice is a good sign, sorry to hear of your previous miscarriage I understand this will make you worry even more, good luck, try not to stress too much x

Yes I did. Saw HB @ 8 weeks, 12 weeks and no. Baby had stopped growing a couple of weeks prior.
