Do they start doing internals at later Midwife Appts?

Hi Girls
Curious really- do they feel whether the head is engaged on the outside or inside? And do they check your cervix etc at all?
Not really bothered just wanted to know what to expect!
Thanks

Hi

I never had an internal throughout my pregnancy, and they just felt externally whether heads engaged or not.

And only had one internal half way through labour!

jinxed · 20/06/2007 10:47

Nope, no internals until labour, unless you go over and the offer you a sweep.

Well in my experience anyway!

Wilkie · 20/06/2007 10:49

Nope - just check the position of the baby externally from about 36 weeks

Wilkie · 20/06/2007 10:49

Think they do internals in the US but not UK

Thanks ladies! It always amazes me how the MWs can feel where the baby is- all I get when I feel my tummy is lumps!

I only had an internal examination by a midwife when I was having a sweep (and when I was in labour).

lizziemun · 20/06/2007 12:21

I only had one internal exam when pg with dd (1st) when i was in labour, starting bleeding and no contractions the midwife didn't know why and had to be examined by a doctor and was already 8cm dilated.

RGPargy · 20/06/2007 13:49

I'm so glad about the lack of internals these days. When i was pg with DS1 (who is approaching 17!!) it seemed that at every appointment i had, you had to have an internal examination. I had LOADS!!! Maybe i was just a really hot sexy mumma and was being felt up by the docs but didn't realise it at the time??

In my case it was more like "Why haven't you got your knickers off yet luv? Spread 'em!"

I have to say though when you are in late pregnancy and they are feeling for the position of the baby's head from the outside that can be pretty uncomfortable IME.
