ELCS and gestational diabetes

I have GD and I'm booked in for an ELCS in a couple of weeks. Does anybody know whether I should take my insulin/meds as normal on the day of the op if I'm not able to eat? I'll be allowed to drink still Lucozade apparently which I assume is to keep my sugar up while I'm waiting. Just wondered if it would be an issue. I will ask at my pre op but curious if anyone has experienced this?

Usually you’ll be the first one on the list, I had GD twice and they kept me in the night before to monitor my sugars before the op. They rearranged my date as someone else needed my slot and they wouldn’t move me to later that day, I had to go first the next day.

Once you’re in hospital they use their own glucose meter and strips, and I think I took my own insulin pen but can’t quite remember.

You’ll be given full instructions at the pre op assessment. Most units have a protocol they follow, depending on the timing of your surgery. If you’re first on the list, you may simply be told to omit your insulin and any oral hypoglycaemics, and miss breakfast. Your blood glucose would be checked on arrival and corrected via a drip if necessary. If you’re a brittle diabetic you may get other instructions or be admitted the night before. Don’t worry, OP - part of the reason for the pre op visit is to sort all this out and arrange your meds.
