Help! Too much choice for sleeping

Hi all,

I'm 31 weeks with our first DC and starting to freak out with all the choice out there in regards to baby's early sleeping arrangements.

I was thinking I'd get a Moses basket but our NCT person said they were a waste of money and a bedside cot was better.

Can people share the sleeping equipment that they bought? We already had a sleepy head which I assumed could be put in the moses basket.

Also, when the baby is napping during the day, what do people without moses baskets do? Does baby just sleep in the sleepyhead on the couch or something?

I just thought a moses basket would be easier to have in the living room and then transport upstairs when we go to bed.

Planning to bottle feed if that helps suggest a certain sleeping option.

Many thanks!

Hey,

I have a almost 4 year old, and pregnant with second!

I don't claim to be an expert but all in all had no big sleeping issues, DS always slept pretty well as did I! Here's what I did/ used;

0-8 weeks; Baby slept in with me, over duvet (me under) in a sleepyhead and sleeping bag (husband in the spare room!)
He would feed pretty regularly when he stirred and I would change his bum at about 10pm (when I was going up to bed) and again at 2am.
I was breastfeeding and had stitches so this was the easiest and comfiest option for me! Almost meant my husband was on good form and made me breakfast in bed every morning as a trade off!

Daytime sleeps; carrycot/ moses basket/ bouncer/ me! They will be sleeping (a lot) so plan watch box sets you want to watch!

8weeks - 16weeks; In moses basket, would sleep solidly from about 11pm-6am-ish, sometimes waking for a feed at about 2am (still breastfeeding)

Daytime sleeps; carrycot/ moses basket/ bouncer

5months-ish; cot in my bedroom

Sleepheads are great, a found ewan the sheep a good help too (i think i liked it mre than my DS though!)

Most important thing is not to expect too much, it takes weeks/month for them to understand day and night, I think there is too much pressure on mums and babies to have them sleepy through and sleeping alone.
They have been inside you for 9 months - its a big transtition! They will want to be close to you day and night.

You will blink and they'll be in a single bed, picking a bedtime story and you'll be waking them for pre-school! Many mornings I miss the sleepless night (a bit!)

Hope this helps or gives you some ideas x

We had a next to me cot upstairs in the bedroom and a Moses basked downstairs. In my experience you will not want to be carrying the Moses basket up and down the stairs with the baby in it as it’s a way too heavy and cumbersome. So deffo something upstairs and something downstairs.

When DS was really tiny, so up to about 3 months, he wouldn’t settle at all in the Moses basket so we got a sleepyhead as so many people recommended them. He slept pretty well in that, either on the sofa or on the floor. It was also handy for taking to other people’s houses. As he got bigger he moved into the Moses for daytime sleeps most of the time. It may depend on which Moses basket you have, but mine is too small to fit the sleepyhead inside - sleepyheads are really wide!

If you’re worried you won’t get the use out of a Moses basket you could always get one second hand? We got ours new from Argos and it was pretty cheap...

We used the carrycot downstairs (on the wheels - with the brakes on obviously). Moses basket upstairs, although baby was touching the ends within weeks so I wouldn't spend loads on one.

We have a bedside crib for upstairs during the night and planning on using the pram carrycot/bouncer/me during the day while downstairs. Haven’t bought a Moses basket, they look so small and quite a few people have said babies tend to outgrow them quite quickly so we haven’t bothered. Baby isn’t here though yet so my methods aren’t tried and tested yet!!

We had a Moses basket for around 2 months which I moved from upstairs to downstairs for daytime naps

She then moved into a snuz pod whixh stays in our bedroom which we love

You can pick up Moses baskets quite cheaply second hand - Just buy a New mattered - then you won’t feel bad if it’s only used for a little while. We brought both the Moses basket and snuz pod second hand

We were given a Moses basket with DD which we used upstairs but she grew out of it so quickly. We used the pram part of the pushchair for downstairs.

This time we're getting a snuzpod for upstairs and pram for downstairs

Got a tutti bambino bedside crib for our bedroom and a sleepyhead-type nest/pod to go on the floor or sofa downstairs for daytime naps. Going to see how we get on with those before buying anything else.
