Pre-eclampsia Risk Consultant Appointment

Hi all,

I am at risk of pre-eclampsia due to my mum having it very severely in her previous pregnancy. I have been prescribed aspirin from the minute the midwife found out about my mums history.
I have my consultant appointment Monday (was meant to be Monday gone but they lost my appointment) I will be 22+6.
I just wondered what this appointment will include as when I asked the midwife she said I’m not entirely sure because it was booked when I was 6 weeks pregnant!
Also what were everyone’s experiences with preeclampsia that a family member had. This is my 1st pregnancy if you cannot tell!

Hi I had sudden eclampsia with my 1st and pre eclampsia with my 2nd. I would honestly try not to worry yourself sick (easier said than done) but just look out for the symptoms and be aware. I was getting really bad headaches seing flashing lights chest pain swelling. It's better they know family member history then you can get kept a close eye on! hope ure pregnancy goes okay x

I had late pre-eclampsia with my 3rd and 30 plus weeks pregnant just Now and have been on aspirin since 12 weeks and now on every 2 week blood pressure checks and have to get 2 more scans for babies growth. At the appointment they just go over history and discuss medicine and if you may need to be induced later on but that's only if your blood pressure if high. Has it been ok at your midwife checks so far..

Firsttimetobe2019 · 07/11/2018 22:40

@rach2713
So far everything’s been fine with the midwifes appointments she doesn’t seem concerned but if i’m honest she’s away with the fairy’s most the time! I’ve had 5 scans already including one private one!
@starsandthemoonx my mums was very sudden and she had to be emergency c-sec and both her and my sister nearly died. The symptoms my midwife said to watch for are frontal headaches, flashing lights/impaired vision, and something about swelling somewhere?!

It’s a constant worry in the back of my mind at the moment as I remember seeing how sick she was and how tiny and early my little sister was!

The swelling will be in your hands feet and face. If its been fine and your on the aspirin I would say your chances are low but it's good that your are getting checked for it so if anything does change they can pick it up quicker. I still worry about getting it in this pregnancy but get the reasurrance that I'm getting more checks..

Starsandthemoonx · 07/11/2018 22:52

I completely understand your worry both my kids were born at 31 weeks first one I took seizures but they never knew I was high risk because other illness I have which have been like to pre eclampsia weren't discovered at the time so although my 2nd was also born at 31 weeks I was awake and was still traumatic but nothing like the first no wonder people think I'm mad for being pregnant again but I have constant checks and will be monitored more than ever! they just have to take precaution because of your mum which is a good thing as it will keep you and baby safe x

My mum had pre-eclampsia, and i went on to have it twice.

Always take a wee sample to your appointments

IfOnlyOurEyesSawSouls · 07/11/2018 23:16

Please have a look at the Action for Pre-Eclampsia website.

You need accurate advice on your risk and this is not the place to find it x

I had pre eclampsia with my DTs, no real symptoms apart from horrific water retention in my feet and legs, which sprung leaks. I called triage expecting to be told it was just the way pregnancy went, and got called in, left 5 days later with my DTs!

Firsttimetobe2019 · 08/11/2018 00:23

Ahhh all you ladies I feel so sorry for! I am going to research continuously just to make sure I don’t go uneducated or unprepared.
I know it’s treatable and haven’t heard any real horror stories so I’m very at ease about it at the moment but as the weeks go by it always niggles in my mind x

I went to my 36 week check with pregnancy 1 and my blood pressure was slightly elevated & I had a trace of protein in my urine but the midwife told me to come back a week later for a check. When I went in a week later I was very poorly. I was so swollen, my urine looked like coffee it was so dark and my blood pressure sky rocketed. I was taken to hospital via ambulance and had my son 24hours later. They couldn’t get my blood pressure down. I have managed to make it to 38weeks with my second pregnancy and everything seems to be going ok. I was on aspirin from 12weeks to 36 weeks and my blood pressure has been fine. I am a little swollen but nothing to the extend last time. I am trying to get baby 2 out now as I’m so uncomfortable and I don’t want to get worse. I wish I had gone to see a midwife earlier and not waited a week to go back

TheMagicTorch · 08/11/2018 13:50

Hi, I had a consultant appointment at approx 13 weeks due to two of my sisters having pre-eclampsia. They tested my blood pressure and urine for any signs, told me to continue with the aspirin daily and we just had a chat about what to look for, and the signs.

I shouldn't need any further consultant appointments, they are happy for me to stay midwife-led, but they check my urine and blood pressure at all my midwife appointments to keep an eye.

Firsttimetobe2019 · 08/11/2018 16:07

Like all of you I am constantly having my urine checked along with my blood pressure. I’m not sure what to expect in all honesty preeclampsia can hit at any stage in pregnancy can’t it?

I asked my midwife yesterday about getting it again and she said you can get it during labour as your blood pressure can rise and you can get is post natally. Those who have had it before or at a higher risk are monitored more post labour

Firsttimetobe2019 · 08/11/2018 17:45

@SB2017
I’ve always had really low blood pressure never any reason for it but the doctors are usually like “oh you should be ill with it like that” but never followed up with why etc. The midwifes been happy with my blood pressure and urine so far but I worry constantly even though I have no reason too.
I feel really well in myself just the back pain is increasing more as I get further along and that’s it so really I shouldn’t worry too much!

My pre eclampsia symptoms were really subtle and it just all of a sudden sprung on me! I’ve suffered a lot recently from anaemia and low blood pressure so now I’m watching out for high blood pressure! It has been normal throughout my pregnancy and I just hope it stays like that!

NatureGal · 08/11/2018 20:32

I developed it during Labour with my third dc, it was my only induction due to little foetal growth. Had , had no bp issues prior to that. It developed into post partum pre-eclampsia and took ten weeks on beta blockers to come down. Was a worrying time. Now pregnant with my fourth, on aspirin and having fortnightly bp checks at 15weeks till due date or before. It's hard not to stress as you never know if or when it may happen.
