Can anyone help please? I'm 21weeks pregnant and I still have never met my actual midwife, I have no clue what team my care will be under and I haven't started antenatal classes? Someone help and reassure me that this is normal? This is my first baby so super anxious about everything anyway 😔

Have you had your dating and anomaly scans?

Sarah28th · 06/11/2018 08:18

Yeah you should of seen a midwife and consultant at ur 20 week scan. You dont start going to see your community midwide until ur over 30 weeks i think! ( i cant remember exactly when and ive just had a baby lol🙄) there will be a list of numbers and contacts in your handheld notes you could always ring someone and doublecheck if you are unsure x

You should have had a booking in appointment sometime in your first trimester which will have been with a midwife - generally that will be your midwife. I only had an appointment at 16 weeks after that, then 24, 28 and eventually it goes to every 2 weeks. Some trusts don't do the 16 week appointments though I don't think.

Have a look on your notes, there should be a community midwives number. If you call them they should be able to offer you some guidance and what to expect.

I had a:

8/10 week midwife appointment

12 week scan

16 week midwife appointment

20 week scan

I have a 26 week midwife appointment coming up.

At my 16 week appointment I was given the info for the nhs antenatal classes which I booked back then for January (I'm 24 weeks)

ShanAmanda · 06/11/2018 09:27

I've had both my scans; didn't see a midwife/consultant after my 20 week scan, the midwife which did my booking appointment and my 16 week appointment isn't my actual midwife as she's not actually from our hospital 😫 I was supposed to meet my midwife at my 16 week one and I didn't 😔 as for antenatal classes I've been given no information about these or how I can get booked on them?

Seems that you have had all the right appointments, some people don't see the same midwife throughout their care anyway, the main thing is that you have been seen. I think I was about 25 weeks when my midwife mentioned how to book antenatal classes, do you have a number for the midwife team you could ring and ask?

champagneplanet · 06/11/2018 09:36

I had a community midwife who was part of a team who I saw for booking in and then appointments. The closer you get to your due date the more regular they will be. In her absence I saw one of her colleagues. These are the people who will also visit you after the birth.

I didn't meet the midwife who delivered both DDs until I was ready to deliver. This is the norm in my area, and very hard to say who will deliver your baby unless you are going to go privately.

You should be able to visit the maternity until closer to the birth to familiarise yourself and your community midwife will be able to antenatal classes, I think mine were from about 32 weeks.

maternity unit

Baby160P · 06/11/2018 09:39

@ShanAmanda everywhere is different but I called the maternity ward in the end to book in as I couldn't get through to the number.

Honestly I would try not to worry too much about not having a specific midwife assigned to you. It is nice and helpful to have a familiar face but as long as the correct tests and examinations are being done that's the main thing

As for antenatal classes, again I would ring the community midwives office and explain that you've been give no information, do they have any. Otherwise I believe that you can search on the NHS website for antenatal classes near you
