Hi Im just wondering if anyone else has been taking ondansetron and has felt really wierd on it? I have had severy nausea for the last 6 weeks now (I'm 11 weeks tomorrow) I have a very strong stomach so usually even if I have food poisoning I don't throw up so in my first few weeks I didn't vomit but the nausea was constant and unbearable. Then at around 9 weeks I started vomitting every couple of days and I have found after I vomit I get a good few hours releif from the nausea. Unfortunately to get to the stage where I actually vomit I have 4-6 hours of even worse nausea than usual and lots of dry heaving etc before anything actually comes up. My doc prescribed me ondansetron because I have to work full time and couldn't function so I've been taking that since about week 6 but after I threw up late night I didn't take my tablet and felt OK (not amazing but not crippled wih nausea all night ). I had been getting a weird feeling as though my body was crammed full of something (only way I can describe it) and I had thought this was just part of the MS but after a day and night off the ondansetron ilthat feeling seems to be easing although I still feel a but queasy. Sorry for the essay but my question is do you think that the ondansetron was stopping me from.vomitting when my body actually needed to vomit and giving me that awful crammed full feeling? Anyone else had this?

@Minihappybaker

Hi! I’m taking this medication at the moment - I’m 17 weeks pregnant. I was given this at 6 weeks too and I still felt weird, and felt more sick just wasn’t sick! I stopped them and was given another beginning with C (I’m trying to sleep which ovbs isn’t working and they are downstairs) ended up in a&e as I was keeping nothing down at all and given an injection of ondansetron this was around 13 weeks. Since then I was given more tablets and I’ve felt better with them. Maybe give them a break for abit? I too am working so tend to only have half/one when I’m in the office. I try to not have any on a weekend but I’m back with my head in the loo! 😞 (the past two weekends have been me Ill but at least I’m not at work!)

I know ondansetron literally stops the sickness (usually anyway!) but the nausea can last - I’m not sure to be honest with your question as I wasn’t getting any relief when sick as I was being sick everything I was eating. As I say maybe try and use them only when you really need to or try to cut back (I can have 2 a day)

Hope you feel better soon!

@anyat212

Thanks for the message wow yours sounds even worse than mine as at least I can keep some food and water down. Is your sickness getting any better at 17 weeks at all? You poor thing. I feel like I can't take another week of this so I can only imagine how you feel. Thanks for the advice. I am trying to only take it when I absolutely have to. Only thing to do is just carry on and take one day at a time and hope it gets better soon. Good luck and I really hope you start to feel better xxxx

I think it’s just one them things unfortunately! I did feel like it was never gunna end and there was a lot of tears, so lucky to have a surportive partner, he’s been fab. It’s definately improving and is manageable - I was worried when I was reading on here that some unlucky women have had this all the way through! I was thinking “oh no that’s gunna be me!” But it’s definately improving I’m feeling more human, less zombie which is a good start haha.

I feel for you though I thought the same thing of not being able to take it. It feels like ages ago now but literally was only weeks ago. As you’ve said just try and take each day as it comes and go from there, I was talking to a woman at work today and she said literally the day after the first trimester her sickness cleared right up and she was really ill will sickness. So I hope yours passes soon - how are you dealing with work? Xxx

Minihappybaker · 07/11/2018 18:52

@Anyat212 oh my gosh I really hope mine just vanishes at 12 weeks! ! Even 1 more week of this seems unbearable. Glad you're feeling a bit better it is good to know there is light at the end of he tunnel. I work in an office and have quite a stressful job managing a small business unit. Work is relentless at the moment with a couple of major projects on the go and a team member down. I am literally I'm survival mode. I just do what I can and try not to worry. Luckily my boss is pretty understanding. I cried in his office yesterday because I feel like I'm doing a shit job at the moment and he was really nice just told me to do what I can and not to worry. I'm lucky I can arrive late and leave early etc but I have an hour and a half commute which is hell! How did you cope with work? Thank God I don't work around food or something as I would be throwing up ever 10 mins! 😣😣

Fingers crossed for you!! There is definately light at the end of the tunnel not sure where this 2nd trimester - wave of energy comes from though.. I’m shattered all the time, are you tired?

Haha what do you work as? Sounds very similar to my set up, we have particular business areas we work with/ help. We have unofficial flexi time which worked a treat today as I was sick this morning. Nice 9.30 start :) I’ve literally just got home from work now - it’s soo busy and one of my colleagues is on holiday so extra workload. I’m in HR so it’s constant recruitment, reports, inductions and interviews (nice 4 hour one tomorrow 😭) are you able to work from home? When I was at the height of the sickness I changed my shift pattern (unofficially) 9.30-5.30 (30mins unpaid lunch) and worked from home on a Wednesday which really helped and broke the week up! If this is something you’re able to do I’d definately raise it with your manager. Especially with that commute - how are you managing that?! Mines only 30mins and I still have a plastic bag at the side as I can’t pull over until I get there.

Glad to hear you have an understanding boss as well, I do too (to be fair id be shocked if she wasn’t) but it does really help. It’s funny you said you cried about doing ‘ a crap’ job I did the same last week - I’m assuming it’s the hormones!

I think I read in the hyperemesis support thread that ondansetron can cause constipation? so people take laxatives to relieve that, maybe thats causing the discomfort?

Best of luck with it OP :)

Anyat212 · 07/11/2018 21:41

Yeah ondansetron is notorious for constipation it’s one of side effects unfortunately Sad

Minihappybaker · 07/11/2018 21:53

@Anyat212 yessbi am exhausted All THE TIME! Sounds dramatic but every day is a struggle just to stay awake until I get home from work. You not feeling less tired yet? Your job sounds quite similar to mine. I'm a sales manager so I usually travel a lot but I'm working on 2 IT projects at the mo which are (thankfully) keeping me in the office. That's good you have been able to work from home. My boss is pretty flexible but I have a small team that needs to be supervised otherwise they don't always get the job done. Got a temp with us at the mo as well who needs a lot of help and noone else who can really do that. I've worked from home a bit but don't want to do it a lot. I am the same as you my commute is all motorway so I carry a bag with me at all times just in case! Do you have other kids? How the hell do people look after small children when they feel like this?? I cabt even walk my dogs!

@Istef yes defo got the memo about constipation. I think that could be making me feel worse. I didn't think you could take laxitives while preggers though did your doc say you can?

@Minihappybaker it’s crazy isn’t it! I’m exactly the same I feel such a sense of achievement once I’m home from work 😂 hopefully you’ll get this burst of energy in the second trimester! I feel myself again but I think I might be more tired than I was in the first - after dinner I’m literally half asleep until I have a sugar boast. It’s weird though as other ladies are more energetic at this time, my body is just taking up every symptom at the moment! Poor OH is listening to me every two mins whining - I don’t know how he puts up with it!

Ah I see your job is definately stressful and a team to manage aswell! Are they aware of your pregnancyt? Completely get the working from home for you, I think it’s nice to WFH don’t get me wrong but I miss being around people and I do work with a nice bunch of people. I’ve got that trusty plastic bag too in my handbag luckily it’s not been used yet.

I don’t have any other children, assuming you don’t either? I know right - I’m proud of myself for finishing a day at work and making tea in that very same day - literally expect a high five & bunch of flowers from my OH!

Minihappybaker · 09/11/2018 02:58

Yeah the team are aware bit I only have 2 direct reports. I told them at 8 weeks because I thought it better they could understand why I was always dashing out of meetings and constantly look like shit. They have been really good. I kind of feel bad for telling them as I feel like its unprofessional but I hate lying and I would rather them know than just thibk I'm shit at my job and have let myself go. Hair and make up defo don't happen every day now which is so not like me! When did you tell your colleagues? I know I honestly do not know how people who already have kids do this. I want a medal just for getting out of bed each day. I cannot imagine having to look after a child as well. I finally cracked an told my mum this morning. I live in New Zealand and mum is in the UK so I didn't want to tell her until 12 weeks but I finally rang her in tears as I was feeling so shit. She said her MS was really bad up until the 12 week mark it pretty much turned off like a tap! I really really hope mine is the same but just can't imagine it as I'm 11.5 weeks now and still going strong! Thanks heaps for the chat. It's good to find someone who undrstands what it's like especially having a stressful job as well. ☺
