15 Week Scan on NHS will they tell me the sex?

So, mainly due to the fact the sonogropher couldn't get all the measurements she needed at 12 weeks, I'm having another scan at 15 weeks to confirm due date and test for abnormalities. Although, she did say at the 12 week one that everything looked healthy! With my last son we paid for a private scan at 16 weeks to find out the sex. Do you think they will tell us at the 15 week scan?! My son is DESPERATE for a baby sister! And would love to tell him either way, ideally without having to spend £80 on private as I already paid for one at 6 weeks and will be paying for another at 30 weeks due to my best friend having some devastating news at this time, only picked up on by chance at a private scan. I don't want to get my hopes up that they will tell me but I'd love for us as a family to know. What do you think?!

They probably won’t tell you until the 20 week scan as 15 weeks is early to be able to say for sure and they won’t want to tell you the wrong thing - however if it is very obviously one or the other you might be able to find out!

TheDayMyButtWentPsycho · 04/11/2018 11:20

No they won't.

pretendingtowork1 · 04/11/2018 11:20

It's not 100% so I'd really advise against telling your son or you could have his disappointment to deal with if they get it wrong.

MsHopey · 04/11/2018 11:22

The reasons private scans won't tell you until 16 weeks is because the baby isn't developed enough to give an accurate answer.
So I very much doubt it, especially as NHS scans are solely for health reasons.

traumwerk · 04/11/2018 11:27

They did at mine, but I was having twins and they were trying to establish if they were identical or not.

AutumnGlitterBall · 04/11/2018 11:30

My hospital doesn’t tell at all. If you want to know, you need to pay privately.

Singlemummyto5 · 04/11/2018 16:29

I was 16+3 at my last scan and they refused to tell me

Shadow1234 · 04/11/2018 16:32

I would be very surprised if they did tell you. 20 week scan is normally the earliest the NHS will tell you (unless there may be a specific reason
for them doing so ). Their main aim is to check that all is well with the baby.

RiverTam · 04/11/2018 16:35

I thiught 20 weeks was the norm, but some hospitals won’t tell you anyway. And they could get it wrong. So I would tell your son it’s impossible to know until the baby is born,

PrincessConsuelaBannanaHammock · 04/11/2018 16:38

I didn't think they could really tell before 16 weeks, and definatley not accurate enough to tell you. Think you would need to wait until 20 weeks. We found out at 15 weeks but that was because we had the harmony test done, not a scan.

BreakYourselfAgainstMyStones · 04/11/2018 16:39

The hospital most likely won't tell you. They are there to check on the health of your baby and are pushed to the limit with time and resources anyway. You'll have to pay privately at around 20 weeks, or just wait until you pay for the scan at 30 weeks and find out then.

Gizmo2206 · 04/11/2018 18:03

We had a 15 week scan with consultant as my other daughter has a limb condition and he offered to tell us and said baby was a boy - at 20 weeks the same consultant said actually a girl (she is a girl)

Monipop84 · 04/11/2018 18:35

I doubt it... unless you find a willing/cheeky sonographer! Grin

TakingtheLeap · 04/11/2018 18:40

A good friend of mine found out at dating scan which turned out to be later on in pregnancy than she thought - almost 14 weeks - so NHS do sometimes tell early! Think it was partly luck with baby being in a position which made it fairly obvious.

anewyear · 04/11/2018 18:49

Had my boys 20 & 17 years ago...
No 1 son I forgot to ask..
No 2 son, I did, I was told 'it has bits a little girl doesn't have'!!
So they did tell you at the hospital I went to back then 😊
Nowadays I'm not to sure about tho 😊

Babyno2mamabear · 04/11/2018 19:45

It's funny isn't it, so many different stories from so many different people. A friend had a private scan at 14 weeks as she had a feeling something was wrong (it wasn't!) But they could easily tell the sex then - I guess it's down to every baby developing differently though! I'll go with it in my mind that we won't find out then! And I will hold out until 20 weeks and then check again at 30! I know our hospital do tell at 20 weeks :) Maybe I'll tell the sonogropher if they happen to see something then they could always drop it in conversation 😄. Thank you though, this has been helpful and I won't get my hopes up!!

I had bleeding and was told my baby was a boy from an internal scan at 13 weeks this time round. It was so clear. I think it depends on the person once they've checked the baby you could always ask. X

Ironytheoppositeofwrinkly · 05/11/2018 08:01

OP, just ask them! The worst they can say is no :) and if not, book a private gender scan that you can go to as a family. Hope you get your little girl!
