Evening all,

So I was diagnosed with gestational diabetes today (joy!) and I'm dealing with it but I have a question about snacking that didn't occur to me at the time.

I obviously have to test my blood before meals and one hour after but how close to that time would 'mess up' the readings if I had a snack? Hope that makes sense!

Thanks for your help!

Hi OP. I'm about 10 weeks past diagnosis now and still diet controlled largely thanks to the Gestational Diabetes UK website and Facebook page. Lots and lots of good advice there. Never eat a naked carb and avoid a lot of the NHS recommended foods.

Generally the advice is to not snack until after your 1 hour test. So eat, test, then if your levels are good try a gd friendly snack.

I think it’s at least 2 hrs before your meal I.E you shouldn’t eat for 2 hours minimum before doing your pre-meal test and you shouldn’t eat in the one hour after.

I also recommend the the FB group as suggested by Limp - it’s good for dietary suggestions and other queries.

You'll get to know what affects your levels (and how). Something protein based doesn't tend to skew my numbers too much. As long as you're in range it's fine. Good luck - it's not easy but you'll manage.

Thanks everyone! I was just concerned that if I snacked too close to dinner, I would ruin my measurements but will make sure I don't snack in the 2 hours before!
