Sweep - apart from sweep itself what are down sides?

I know there are a few threads around of cervical sweeps but there's one thing I'm trying to clarify. Apart from the fact that the sweep itself can be uncomfortable or even painful for some women, can it impact on the type of labour you have (in the way that other intervention can) or is it just a case of if you're ready it'll bring on your natural labour, if you're not, it won't?

For me it was a great help in kick starting my labour as I was nearly 2 weeks overdue. I had a great labour with no intervention and just gas and air.

there were no negative side effects for me. I had a sweep in the morning about 8 days after my due date. during that day I had a few pains and some show come through, and by that evening I was having early regular contractions. And about 36 hours after hte sweep I had my heathly baby boy. I had him naturally with absolutely no complications.

So for me the sweep was a good (and very welcome relief) thing.

sweep was good for me too! The MW warned me it would be painful but I didn't even feel it. I was already 3cm dilated and DS2 was born the following evening after a very straightforward and short labour

Great help for me too - just after due date and went into labour 24 hours later.

Thanks all for encouraging words. I'm only 39 weeks but they're offering a sweep cos of a medical condition. Can't decide whether to go for it... Finally got house ready, quite nice to have a bit of time doing absolutely nothing!
