Lying down (not sleeping): which position?

Just as above really. I know when sleeping it is suggested that being on your side (preferably right) is best in the 2nd-3rd trimesters is recommended.

Is this still the case if you are just lying down i.e to watch TV/read a book etc?

I think you can be on your back if you’re propped up so you aren’t lying totally flat. Just pop cushions up your back to ensure you aren’t constructing blood flow. If you start to feel nauseous or light headed then move onto your side.

I thought it was your left side that you’re supposed to sleep on?
I’m 32 weeks and try to lie down as little as possible to be honest. I either sit on the exercise ball or sit with a cushion under my bum to tilt my pelvis forward. My first baby was a back to back labour and I’m keen to avoid that again (second baby was so much easier to deliver!).
Generally though as long as you’re not completely flat on your back you should be ok.

Whatever's comfiest! I think it's the long time, like 8 hrs, that is the issue with lying on your side. For shorter times, I'd just find a comfy position. You'll probably shift around a bit anyway.

It is definitely the left.

The theory is that your heart doesn't have to work so hard to pump blood when you lie on your left. And that lying on your back results in the risk of the baby's weight pressing down on your blood vessels and cutting circulation to the placenta.
I'd do whatever's comfortable really, so long as you're not flat on your back. Leaning on a yoga ball and circling your hips is surprisingly comfortable, especially if you wodge the ball against a wall or sofa so you can really press against it.

I just went to a physio appointment with a nurse at the hospital all about finding comfortable seating and lying positions and she said there is very sketchy evidence that left side is better than right. And it’s fine to be on your back if you are propped up - just not flat on your back. You will feel discomfort before anything effects your baby.

Lying on the left helps with acid reflux too, not sure why it does but it's recommended and it works for me. I had reflux before I was even pregnant and always lie on my left side when sleeping or on the sofa.
