Baby’s Abdominal circumference over the 97th percentile

Hi all, I’ve had yet another growth scan yesterday (34 weeks) and was told that baby is measuring over the 97th percentile in relation to abdominal circumference, and that he weighs in at 6.1 pounds already.

This is my third baby. First was 9.3 second 8.5. I’ve put on loads of weight and despite having an all clear at the 28 week Gestational Diabetes test, this is now a concern again and I’m seeing a specialist midwife today.

Consultant booked me in for an induction at 38 weeks and told me yesterday that I’m measuring at 37 weeks.

I don’t mind being induced as I’ve been induced with both children, but am concerned about being induced before my due date. Just interested to hear of anyone had similar experiences.

Yes all measurements at 97th to over 100 % ile right from 20 weeks. No gd despite numerous tests. 3 previous large babies - 8lb, 8lb at 37 weeks and 10 lb. I was induced at 38 weeks as.id had very quick labours so a unplanned hb was a real possibility, he was 11 lb!

I have had similar but only had induction a week after due date, despite them knowing he was big (10lb4 in the end - was fine). Nice guidelines state that in the absence of any other issues, babies shouldn't be induced just because they are suspected to be big. I discussed this with my consultant this time around as I don't want to be induced early, knowing it often fails etc. He said he wouldn't do it for big baby alone. I would understand it if you tested positive for gestational diabetes but that isn't the case. Even with my first they tested him twice after birth, but sometimes people just have bigger babies!

I had similar. Dc2's tummy was so big at a scan at 36 weeks that the computer couldn't cope with the figures and the sonographer had to work out stats by hand. He was born at home at 36 +6 and weighed 8 pounds 10. My easiest birth by far. 4.5 hours from first twinge. The midwife pointed out that large tummies aren't a problem because they are squishy. Large heads on the other hand.....

Thanks so much for replying all.

I’ve been checking blood sugars for a day now, and so far all is within normal range. Have to continue testing and then will be back to see the diabetes midwife next week. Like you said acity, some people just have bigger babies. I hope this is the case.

joe this is my second lot of GD testing. DD was the same - 97th percentile, no GD, 9.3 lb at 40+3.

neo, luckily his head is measuring writhing the acceptable, and thankfully civilised normal range. Grin

Has it been measuring consistently high? Will they scan you again before they induce?

I’m only asking because I had a ridiculously high AC reading at my 28 week scan, but it was back along the 90th by 32 weeks. They think baby might just have had a full tummy at the 28 week scan. It would be worth clarifying if you’d rather not be induced x

I just measured at 28 weeks, 32 weeks, 34 and an booked again at 36 weeks.

I don’t have a problem with induction per se; what worries me is if induction is unnecessary and too soon and therefore leads to C Section.

They told me similar about my daughter, and that she was already weighing 7lbs 4 at my 34 week scan and therefore she’d be massive when she was born. I had a section at 38 weeks and she was 7lbs 2 Hmm

That’s exactly what worries me, riotlady Sad
