Can the docs be wrong?

My period is currently 59 days late and I’m not sure what to do now. I know that sometimes you just miss a period but I’ve now missed my second by a few days, too. Went to the docs two weeks ago, did a urine test and the result came back negative. However, I’ve been incredible nauseous, terrible heartburn, fluttering feeling in my stomach, slight weight gain on stomach even though overall I’ve actually lost weight lately. I spotted on day 27 and that’s it. Confused

Been back to the docs today and they’re just fobbing me off. Refusing to look into it any further even though I know my own body and I know that something isn’t right. Refused to do bloods/scan and the most I could get out of them is another urine test which I’m feeling very unsure about.

Is it possible to just produce a very low level of hcg?

My elder sister was told she wasn’t pregnant by docs twice and then found out later on that she was 15 weeks pregnant, and my mum also was told she wasn’t pregnant and was nearly 4 months pregnant with my little sister, too.

I’m really frustrated because they said that if this next one comes back negative, they want me to take a course of tablets which will force a period. I’m feeling incredibly uneasy about this, as if I am pregnant and they can’t detect it, this will surely cause me to miscarry? Very frustrated by all of this and very upset.

Can anyone shed any light on any similar experiences?

It’s not something I’ve ever heard of personally but that doesn’t necessarily mean it’s not a thing. Why not book a private scan just to reassure yourself? Have you taken any home tests at all? Wondering if the drs have a dodgy batch of tests or something

Lilbear14 · 30/10/2018 17:53

My friend has something similar, tbh it was almost exact and she actually ended up going to A&E, she told them she was getting cramping and the other symptoms and they checked her out fully. She was 15 weeks pregnant. It out of pure desperation as she felt so unwell for weeks, noone was helping her and it was last resort for her in a sense.

However, I went in to my doctor's earlier this year. My period that month was a lot lighter than usual and they sent me for my bloods to check HCG, no hesitation what so ever. When I spoke to them about it they did say if it was a missed period then they would have asked me to wait for a second missed period. It was more because I did have some form of bleeding.

What's worrying is, this could be down to something else...so why are they not investigating?

If you can afford it, it might be worth paying for a private scan for reassurance. If nothing shows obviously you can continue to investigate with your GP as to what is happening. If there is a baby then you will finally be taken seriously and getting the medical care you deserve.

There are some places that do scans for £40-£60 which I appreciate is a fair bit of money but might be worth it if you're not getting any answers.

Have the doctors done a blood test as well as a urine test?

lmh1207 · 30/10/2018 18:08

I’m going to have to book a private scan I think because I haven’t had any normal symptoms of my period coming at all. My home tests have either come out as negatives or inconclusive.

That’s crazy! I can’t believe that she had to go to a&e to get answers. It makes me so mad. I think I’m going to go to a sexual health clinic next week because they’re alway so nice and helpful there, but I keep getting really strange feelings in my stomach. I wish my doctors were as helpful as yours sound!

I know, that’s what’s so mind-boggling to me. If I’m not pregnant, then something isn’t right and they don’t seem bothered at all.

I’m definitely going down the route of a private scan I think. I’d rather 10000% know and get peace of mind whether I am or I’m not.

No, I asked but they refused to do a blood test because they “don’t see the point”.

Very odd from the doctors! Surely they should do a blood test to help find the source of the issue or eliminate a possible cause! Hopefully the scan can give you some peace of mind.

If you're not pregnant, I'd be assertive about the fact that you want to know the cause of the issue. It's all very well then giving you a tablet to force a period but that's not very helpful in discovering what is happening in your body! I do hope they start to be more helpful for you OP!

lmh1207 · 30/10/2018 19:01

You would have thought so! I just don’t know why they’re not looking at the cause rather than just skipping straight to a solution. It’s really bizarre.

Thanks for your help and advice!

Defiantly get a scan op - your symptoms could also be ovarian cysts which can get picked up on a scan (if they look for them).

I had the opposite - had cysts but male doctor tried to convince me I was pregnant until a female sonographer told him to stop being ridiculous

KateTTC123 · 30/10/2018 19:55

Let us know how you get on op x

Shadow1234 · 31/10/2018 01:44

Sorry you have been treated this way by your GP. I also think a private scan is the best move. I would also seroiusly think about changing my GP if I was treated like that. Hope you find some answers.

Starrygirl12 · 31/10/2018 02:26

Hey

I'd definitely get investigated and insist they check everything my periods went crazy on and off missed ones and then bleeding every few weeks and eventually I was sent for a scan which showed a cyst! It's definitely worth getting!

Good luck x

physicskate · 31/10/2018 08:58

The pills to start a period (norithesterone) are progesterone which would cause a bleed after the course (as progesterone withdrawal causes periods) but progesterone would not harm a pregnancy. This is the standard treatment if you've missed a period and aren't pregnant.

You're right that it is common to be late, and not all that unusual to miss a period. But if you're not feeling right, it needs to be looked at.

Did you recently come off hormonal birth control?

lmh1207 · 31/10/2018 21:47

I’ve enquires about a scan for next Thursday so fingers crossed I can get that booked. My GP did mention PCOS so I definitely want to see if that’s an issue when I get the scan, too.

I came off hormonal birth control last August, and my periods have been regular since January, so it’s weird that they’ve just been so messed up. I did consider my implant affecting my cycle, but it’s been too long, I reckon.

You say you've lost some weight overall? When my weight dipped low my periods would stop. I certainly wasn't anorexic looking but I was trying to get my abs to show more and get stomach definition. So my diet was low fat etc. Anyway my point is sometimes a small weight loss can stop your periods. And your mind can fill in the gaps.

Hope you get the result you want with your scan.

TheSubtleKnifeAndFork · 06/11/2018 14:16

@lmh1207 did you have a scan in the end? Been wondering how you got on. Hope all is well either way!

adviceonthepox · 09/11/2018 14:27

How did you get on?

Thankewe · 09/11/2018 14:36

Did you have the scan?

SinkGirl · 09/11/2018 14:39

You need a scan to rule out ectopic pregnancy, IMO

GemmaJen · 09/11/2018 17:44

Periods are a strange thing. 8 years ago I went a whole year without any. Eventually got an NHS scan which confirmed PCOS, but in every other way was asymptomatic. Periods before we're regular and periods since have been too, and no PCOS signs on ovaries now. So who knows what it was. A private scan should help, they will have to do internal to check ovaries.

Fingers crossed for a positive outcome, sounds like your family have a history of undetected pregnancy. X
