Second hand prams?

Hey girls :) I'm currently at 20weeks and am starting to get bits in for the baby. But DH and I are shocked at how much prams are! I honestly think we would struggle to afford one new.

I know it's considered a bad idea to buy second hand cots/mattresses/car seats, but does anyone know if second hand prams is an issue health and safety wise?

Looking on Ebay I can see some of the really nice models for less than half the price! Just don't want to risk it if it will be a risk to the baby in any way.

Any experience with this? X

My mum really wanted to buy us a new pram. But the cost was insane.

We bought second hand and it was the best decision ever. At 5 months we bought a stroller and much prefer it as it's light and smaller. I'd be gutted if we had spent £1000 on a pram and not £250 for a 2nd hand one from eBay

Me and my OH half said straight away we will be buying second hand.

We went into a few stores and could not believe the prices. Some were the same as a decent second hand car!!
If you have the money then fair enough but we would rather be able to save and buy more than skint ourselves trying to buy brand-new.

To add to my post. A lot of second hand prams on eBay are aboslutely fine. People are just selling as they are not used anymore. If you are local to the seller you could always ask to see the pram before purchase/bidding so you can check it yourself. Most wouldn't mind at all.

I've bought a second hand pram it was the model I wanted and is absolutely immaculate I picked it up off a selling site for £200 as opposed to £700 new. What we save by buying things second hand will hopefully allow me to have longer on maternity which is far more important to me than buying new (save the safety things like mattresses etc)

Hi @Spooples,

I've come across a website called preciouslittleone.com. They have a Winnie the Pooh trio pram - the carry cot, car seat, and the upright seat, for £130. They have the plain grey version for £139 if you don't want Winnie on there.

It's fantastic value for money and may end up cheaper than a second hand one.

So many fantastic deals to be had on second hand prams! Have a look on gumtree and Facebook selling pages too!

My DM spent £800 on a brand new silver cross for us and I still feel quite sick at it now. Especially at how we've ended up buying a Maxi Cosi Elea for only £40 second hand as we needed a lighter, smaller pram really.

I got a second hand pram, washed everything and replaced the carrycot mattress with a new one. Worked perfectly.

WerewolfNumber1 · 26/10/2018 17:29

We bought a new mattress for the pram, but otherwise second hand is absolutely fine.

TokenGinger · 26/10/2018 17:29

I need to convince DP to let me get a second hand pram. I want the Venicci travel system but it's so expensive. The second hand prams are in such fantastic condition!

AwkwardAsAllGetout · 26/10/2018 17:32

Second hand is absolutely fine, and in my experience I’d far rather have a decent pram second hand than a cheap one brand new. You really do get what you pay for in that respect, cheap pram feel cheap and flimsy, and are a real wrestle to push. I’m expecting our fourth and all my dc have had good secondhand prams. We’ve bought this one an Uppababy Vista locally from eBay for £200 compared to nearly £1000 new. It’s in really good condition and I know that when we’re done with it we can sell it without a huge loss. I’d be looking at what’s available somewhere new like John Lewis, go and have a go with them all and see what suits your needs. Then go and look secondhand. My friend bought a Bugaboo at a car boot sale for £50!

Notquiteagandt · 26/10/2018 17:34

Look for prams that have been serviced before sale or ones that where secondary at grandparents house etc. If you are worried. They will be in much better condition. And if you get one thats been serviced it will give you reassurance everythings been checked.

You can get new buggy with car seat for £99+ on Argos.
