12 Week Scan didn't go to Plan

Hi everyone! Had my 12 week Scan last night and very happy to say there is a baby in there with a good strong heartbeat. Problem is....the baby was just TOO active and not in the right position! I came and went 3 times and the ultrasound lady tried EVERYTHING to get measurements for screening and for dates. She got neither! So now I'm not able to have the screening for Downs, Edwards and Pateau (sp?) I'm having another scan in 3 weeks to confirm dates but they couldn't do the bloods last night. Now I have to have a Quad test? Which can still test for downs but won't test for the other 2 and won't be as accurate. Has anyone had this before and what was the outcome? I don't want to spend the rest of my time worrying about these things now they cant test for them. Thank you!

They couldn't get mine first time round but they asked me to go back in the next day for another scan where they could get the measurements they needed. Is there anyway they could try again sooner than 3 weeks time?

@Babyno2mamabear my DS was in the wrong position for measurements and I was told to come back an hour later and it was fine and they could run the tests. I think you should call your midwife and ask for an earlier scan. Tell them the thought of not having the full test is making you anxious. I don't think it is right that they make you wait 3 weeks. I hope you manage to get an earlier scan. Alternative would be to have a private NIPT scan but they are quite pricey.

You could pay to have the nuchal scan and bloods done privately or you could look into the NIPT? I have had the NIPT in both my pregnancies and declined the NHS screening.

The quad test does test for Edwards.

My baby was being uncooperative too, so I went for the quad test. It identified a potential issue with my placenta that probably wouldn’t have been noticed otherwise, so I’m under extra obs. I’m very glad I went for it (baby is fine at 32w, just has to have growth monitored every 2 weeks).

You could pay for private tests though :)

I had the exact same, baby was flipping and doing somersault so couldn't do screening tests. Had quad test in the end and came back extremely unlikely to have downs....being completely honest, I'm now 26 weeks pregnant and haven't given it a second thought about the tests I couldn't have. I'm just so thankful and grateful that size wise he's on track and all his organs etc at his scans were okay and that he's really really active that you just don't think about it x

The quad test is 75% accurate. I had it a few weeks ago and was given high risk results. Went on to pay for the NIPT test and the 99% accurate result is extremely low risk. I'm finding a lot of people saying the same. For real reassurance the NIPT is better but expensive

Hi everyone, thanks so much for all of your responses. We had 3 different scans that evening, spaced out about 2-3 hours and for love nor money this lady couldn't get anything. I will call my midwife tomorrow though and just say I'm feeling a little unsettled about it. I had considered the NIPT but the cost....we are moving to Aus not long after the baby is born and money isn't really on our side at the moment! I'll call the midwife and see. It's reassuring to know some of you have been through similar though, and you're right, happy and healthy organs is the most important thing to look for. Thanks everyone xx

In NI the quad test is all that is offered and I had that. It's 75% accurate and can also give risks for spins bifida. Trisomy 13 and 18 should most likely be picked up by scan due to serious deformities associated (some are still missed) However even the NT is only a screening tool and will still miss some diagnosis of chromosome abnormalities.. NIPT is more accurate for T21 (Down syndrome) (around 99%) but not much more for the others. The only definite way is a diagnostic test (cvs/amino).
I have had problems with my 20 week scans both times - baby wouldn't get into position and had multiple call backs to look at heart. It's stressful
