Opinions on getting early scans?

After 12 months of trying for a baby and one previous miscarriage, we got our BFP a week and a half ago. We are so excited and everything feels like it is going right with how my body is reacting. Sore, achy swollen boobs but no sickness yet. I have a very long cycle so according to that I'm 7.5 weeks but probably actually only about 6 weeks from conception.

I have been toying with the idea of an early scan because of the miscarriage we had - just to make sure baby is doing ok. We are torn on if we should. One part of me says yes so we can see things are ok, the other part says no for fear that things aren't ok, or if we are actually earlier on than my LMP dates then the baby might be tiny tiny with no heart beat yet and I'll be scared. Has anyone been in this position? What did you choose to do, or what would you do?

That’s another thing I was going to mention OP, I ovulated a week late before my pregnancy earlier this year and I only knew this because I get ovulation pain but not everyone does. I knew my I was something like 7-7+4 weeks pregnant when I went for my scan but my LMP would’ve had me at 8-8-8+4. If I hadn’t known when I’d ovulated and been told that I was measuring at least a week behind at the scan I’d have absolutely freaked out and it would’ve just caused more worry and stress.

@Iswallowtoothpaste I'm in the same boat - I have endometriosis so can often feel ovulation and although the Dr has me down at 8 weeks today I'm fairly sure 6.5 - 7 weeks is more accurate. I will just have to explain that and my long cycle to the clinic (I put down that I was 6 weeks pregnant going on worst case and it generated on my booking that my last LMP was 12 Sep but it was actually 30 Aug).

Hello OP. I am 11+4 and had an early scan at 8+3. Mainly just because of my anxiety and being terrified of an ectopic pregnancy. I just wanted to know where things stood, either way. Apparently I have an inverted uterus so the sonographer couldn't see anything and they did an internal scan, where I saw a lovely little thing attached to a yolk sack via a cord. Like you, I have very long cycles so measured 7+1 but I was happy with that and it made sense to me. Seeing a flickering heartbeat was great. Now just waiting for an appointment for my nhs 12w scan. I recommend the early scan.

I had an early scan at 6 weeks in one of my pregnancies, because I'd had bleeding and convinced was bad news, but everything was ok. I would only have one if you had reason to think the worst, such as bleeding or history of miscarriage. Otherwise I think it's better to wait till 12 weeks when the pregnancy is a bit more established.

Hi all, just to let you know how our early scan went today. It had to be done using transvaginal ultrasound as baby is so little, bit it was there with a little heartbeat. I know we aren't in the clear until the end of the first trimester but this has really helped me today due to the miscarriage I had a few months ago. Doc was way out with my dates, she dated me at 6+1 today. My husband was really pleased too as for some reason he was paranoid that we might have managed to get 4 false positives with tests and that we were getting excited over nothing.

Lovely news @gimmeadoughnut123. I know what you mean about it being early days etc. but I totally understand the need for reassurance. I wish I'd booked mine for earlier. I'm desperate to know that this little one is all ok and hanging on in there... 2 more weeks!

gimmeadoughnut123 · 29/10/2018 16:47

@Newbie21 hoping the next couple of weeks go quickly for you! I'm going to get a bump to baby diary when I'm a few more weeks in - hopefully filling it in will help fill the gaps in between appointments! We have had to move our MW appointment back by 2 weeks now based on the scan at the weekend.
