Low placenta

Hi guys

So I went to my 20 week scan to find out that I have a low lying placenta, which means I would require a c-section and a spine injection, unless the placenta moves back up with baby’s growth. I would have to wait until my 35 week scan for this. Off course, I’m absolutely terrified, I wanted a natural birth and knowing that I’d need a c-section scares me.

I wanted to know if anyone has or had this same problem and their outcomes. Any help or advise would be greatly appreciated

Hi @Sallsarr399 I had completely covering placenta at 20 weeks. Just been for a scan yesterday at 32 weeks. It's now moved to 1.9cm away. It's not quite enough yet. But i still have 8 weeks to go. So hoping it will move a little more. The uterus will do LOADS of growing between now and 35 weeks, so you have a pretty good chance of it moving. I'm also hoping for a mega natural water birth and at the moment it's not quite clear which way it will go for me, I'm still hopeful. I have a consultant chat tomorrow. I'll let you know what they say. So don't panic just yet hun. Xx

Hiya. @Sallsarr399 I too have the same problem low lying posterior. I'm 22 weeks now and have to wait until 36 weeks for my scan to see if it's moved which I'm really hoping it has as I want a natural birth like my other 2. So I know how your feeling but like other poster had said their I still plenty of time for them to move up out of the way. That's all I keep telling myself. As their is nothing I can do about it anyway lol

Having a c section is vastly preferable to bleeding to death from a ruptured placenta praevia!
If your placenta moves up, fine, you can aim for the vaginal birth you wanted.
If not, you will be spared all the pain and stress of labour, and will have a safe, controlled, pain free surgical delivery.
Have a chat with women who have had sections- I think it will reassure you that it’s not the big deal you fear. Many women who’ve experienced both section and vaginal deliveries say they preferred the section. Try not to worry- you will be looked after by trained professionals, who will make the right decisions for your and your baby’s safety. Good luck, OP. I’m sure you’ll be fine, whatever your mode of delivery.

I had this. Had a scan at 34 weeks and it had moved well out of the way

TryingToStayRational · 23/10/2018 10:58

I know it’s easy to say, but try not to worry too much as there is a 90% chance that by the next scan the placenta will be in a higher position and no longer an issue. There is nothing you can do to influence it, so fingers crossed for you Smile

I was told I had a low laying placenta at my 20 week scan so was sent for an extra scan at 32 weeks. Everything was fine. I'm now 34+6. I wouldn't worry to much about it it's totally out of your control anyway so try not to worry yourself! I researched and I'm pretty sure only about 10% of women who are told they have a low laying placenta actually do still have one by the time they get to the extra scan x

I'm the same! Low lying, anterior placenta, got another scan booked in. It's not my ideal situation, but so many people have told me that theirs lift I'm putting it to back of my mind for a while. However she needs to come out safely is a-ok with me. Hang in there and try not to worry :)

I was in your position four months or so ago and was anxious about this.

However I had my scan at 34 weeks and all had resolved itself (the placenta had moved up) and I'm now 38 weeks waiting for my baby to arrive.

I think this is very common as a few friends I mentioned it to had it during their pregnancies too, and in each case it resolved itself.

EnglishIrishRose · 23/10/2018 16:35

Hi there, I've had the same, my scan is in 2 weeks to see if it's moved. Like other posters have said it's a 9 in 10 chance it will move.
Like you I did worry a lot about it, I want a home birth so obviously C section is not my ideal. But after research about an elective section and reading some positive C section birth stories, I feel a lot better. Hypnobirthing has massively helped me chill out about the whole thing and it's suitable for all kinds of births, I'd highly recommend it.
Best of luck to you! In the worst case a section will be safest for you and baby and you'll be in safe hands either way. It's hard to hear that we might not get the 'ideal' birth but you really never know until it happens so try not to stress until the scan - easier said than done I know.

4 friends have had placenta periva this year - all of theirs moved. 2 have delivered vaginally already no issues. Please do not be hard on yourself about this hopefully all is well.
