Bacteria in urine.... should I be worried?

Hi everyone,
I got a call this evening about 7pm from my midwife saying the urine they took from me a few weeks ago has a rare bacteria in it that isn't a urine infection and I'm to go to the hospital tomorrow to give another sample as they need a microbiologist to look at it as the antibiotics for this can't be given to pregnant women so they need to know exactly what it is so they can find out how to treat it. Should I be overly concerned or is this a fairly normal thing? They said it's not a urine infection so I'm panicking

Should say: I don't know what any of those things are, do you know what they are? Sorry for the wording of the other one.

I've googled it and now I'm panicking even more

If it’s an infection found in your urine, then it will be a urine infection, just not your average run of the mill infection.
I imagine they will run a repeat sample, to check you haven’t fought off the infection yourself, and if you still have it then they’ll be able to pick the safest antibiotic for you.
I can only think the MW has got a bit muddled when she said it’s not a urine infection.
Hope you get seen soon, to help put your mind at ease a bit

Don’t google, microbiology is a huge topic, you will just scare yourself!
For example, E. coli when found in urine - no big deal, most common organism found in urine infections.
E. coli when found in poo - not fantastic, will lead to slight flapping by health professionals and investigations to try to figure out how the E. coli got into your system (food history etc).
You’ll know more tomorrow, don’t try to guess (as hard as it is not to)

It can often help, but can also convince you that you have a rare tropical disease, the likes of which haven’t been seen since Queen Victoria was on the throne ;)

I agree with 3ou - Google is nobody's friend here. Most likely situation is that your urine grew bacteria (maybe a small number meaning you don't actually have an infection) but the standard test only looked at using antibiotics that pregnant women can't have, so they need to retest with other antibiotics to see what (if any) you will need. Don't Google and try not to worry. Microbiologists know their stuff, they're the right Dr for this.

*3out - sorry, mobile site is weird today and isn't typing properly

Opheliasgoldenwine · 22/10/2018 22:39

@UniversalTruth that's made me feel a bit better, it's probably nothing but I'm a worrier by nature.

Try not to worry too much, if its a rare bacteria to find in urine it may well just be a contaminate! Either from the container or potentially from vaginal fluid.

Hope you got on ok today OP

Hi,
I went to the hospital yesterday and it was quite quick; I didn't see a midwife, just peed in a sample and handed it into reception and left. I don't know when they'll tell me what they find and the wait is making me anxious. Have first scan tomorrow so I'm excited about that

First scan, yay! So exciting! Give your midwife a ring on Friday morning to see if the result is back yet (if you haven’t heard by then). Then there’s plenty time for them to speak to the microbiologist if needed. There’s always someone on-call, but it’s generally easier to get hold of someone during office hours.
All the best for tomorrow! :)
