Hiya, I recently found out I'm pregnant. I think I'm 5+5 but I'm a size 16/18. I'm really worried about my weight as my previous (first) pregnancy ended in miscarriage. I vowed I would lose weight before trying again but I am pregnant again (very happily so) but it was a surprise!

I've been to the doctor and he has said that it is actually advisable to lose weight providing it's not done in any extreme ways.

Has anyone else managed to lose weight while pregnant? Did you follow a particular plan or just eat healthily?

Thanks. I really want to be in the best shape I can be. Also in regards to exercise I have started swimming and walking again so it's really just the eating I need to master! If you have any tips I'd really appreciate it xx

I'm 28 weeks and have just joined slimming world with the blessing of my midwife and dietician. Both said they didn't want me dieting or calorie counting but were happy with gentle exercise e.g walking and aqua natal and following a healthy eating plan.

Try not to beat yourself up too much about your weight, I planned on losing before I got pregnant but caught a lot quicker then expected! Booked in with a BMI of 36 feeling horribly guilty and that I was putting myself and baby at risk and expecting a lot of judgement. I've had none of that just extra support and some extra appointments (for example this morning where I'm experiencing the joys of a glucose tolerance test!)
Congratulations on your pregnancy and good luck :)

Thank you. My BMI is the same as yours and I also had the exact same feelings. Horrible guilt and feeling a little bit ashamed that I've let myself get to this point.

I'm now trying to eat more healthily but it is hard. If anyone else has any tips I'd really appreciate it x

My recently-discovered tips include mild morning sickness (slightly effective) and actually eating a balanced diet. By that, I mean that you try to eat the healthy food, but make sure that you slightly reduce the amount of carbohydrates and sugars you consume (you still definitely need carbohydrates!!), eat loads of vegetables, and try to make sure you get enough protein and fat.

Fat and protein fill you up better than other food, while carbohydrates prime you to be hungry again.

I don’t mean that you should go wild, but maybe have the full-fat versions of things, with as many simple carbohydrates swapped out for vegetables as you can bear, and a bit of protein with every meal. Even breakfast, if that works. Don’t leave yourself hungry, as that doesn’t lead to good places!

Since hearing this advice, I’m probably the same weight as I was before. Everything is starting to feel more comfortable, though - instinctively I feel as though it is a good way to eat, and I’ve started to want to eat food which is good for me, most of the time.

Also, I’ve been eating out a lot because I’ve been working on site, which probably hasn’t helped!

Good luck!

Antenatal classes, some walking, some light Pilates and some swimming exercise wise.

Eating, up dairy and meat etc, if you eat it, up veg, cut out crap and watch your carbs (just a little bit of mash etc.)

You may find morning sickness gets rid of the rest.

I weighed more at conception than before delivery with DC2

The advice you get is probably going to be wooly and will depend on who you see. My midwife is not bothered about my high BMI as long as I am not going crazy. I'm 19 weeks now and gained 4lb so far, I've just slightly increased my walking and slightly decreased my carbs.

I have come across staff in the hospital who have been quite patronising. One asked me whether I had ever tried healthy eating Hmm she wasn't interested in going into detail about any mental or physical health problems and the best advice she could give was to stop eating pasta sauce.

Don't embark on any weight loss plan without asking your midwife. Ultimately, there are other indicators (blood pressure etc) that are more indicative of a problem than your weight alone.

I lost a stone with borderline HG !
Sorry not helpful I know. I'm 37 weeks now and definitely made up for it!
I think it's probably possible to lose weight in the 1st tri if you do it slowly and sensibly. Might be hard though if you suffer nausea / sickness as often carbs are the one thing you can eat!
Just everything in moderation and gentle exercise. Slimming world would probably be a good idea.
Congratulations OP!
