Pregnancy symptoms before positive tests

Hello! Can you get pregnancy symptoms like sickness and headaches before an actual positive pregnancy test. I'm not due on my period until Tuesday but I feel sick and headaches out of nowhere but tests are negative
Thanks

You could be, depending on the test you're using and given you haven't missed a period, but I didn't have any until I was almost 7 weeks. A lot of women post the same on here during the two week wait and they're psychological symptoms rather than meaning anything.

hammeringinmyhead · 21/10/2018 16:28

Sorry, I mean you haven't missed a period yet so it could be too early.

Melrose86 · 21/10/2018 17:11

I got a cold sore and mouth ulcers just before ny bfp. Also my stomach felt like i had been doing sit ups. They were the only things different for me before i got the bfp but wouldnt of guessed them as pregnancy symptoms at the time!x

I think that the general consensus is if your hormone levels are high enough to cause symptoms then they should be high enough to give you a positive test. Did you use an early result test?

Lilbear14 · 21/10/2018 21:35

I felt absolutely awful two days before I tested which were 3 days before period was due.

I had 2 very very faint positives on cheap tests.
Got a negative on clear blue digital
Then two hours later (because I was really impatient) got a positive on the other digital.
So it will depend on how sensitive the tests are and how diluted your urine is especially when it's before a missed period.

I'm 13 weeks now and I had really strong symptoms (in my case super sensitive boobs/nipples and lower back ache which lasted about 3-4 days) starting 10 days before my positive, which I got around about the day my period was due (my cycles being short and not perfectly regular it's hard to say exactly), I tested 5 days before my positive, and got a neg (v. early attempt; thought I might get lucky because of my short cycles).

The symptoms were absolutely were not psychological. I can understand why people who didn't have symptoms this early would think they must be, but every one is different, and I know what i experienced.

I know that I ovulate early in the month, so for me it made sense that this would have been the time when implantation was taking place. The symptoms were absolutely nothing like my usual menstrual symptoms (which is one of the things all the websites warn against confusing them with) and in any case would have been far too early in the month for that!

So yes, it absolutely is possible. But of course you still have to wait to test.

*Caveat here is that it turns out I am having twins so my hormones may well have been higher than normal. But I still didn't get an early positive so I don't necessarily agree with Darkstar above that if your hormones are high enough to feel symptoms then you would get a positive test.

I don't know about the science of it but I knew I was pregnant before I got a bfp and in fact had 2 bfn to start with. I had minor symptoms but I did have implantation spotting a couple of days, a funny tummy and some cramping. So I had symptoms but my tests weren't positive. That said, I'm not convinced by the quality of the tests I used the first time. I spent a fortune (I live overseas) on a FRER in the end and that gave me a clear bfp.

Nat6999 · 22/10/2018 01:35

I had mega PMT like symptoms, was in the worst mood ever, would have picked a fight with anyone. Didn't realise I was pregnant, we were away on holiday, nearly split up & got divorced, came home & as we were unpacking the car in grim silence I knew something wasn't right, found a FRER in a drawer & hey presto got my BFP. Best bit was the day we were going on holiday we got an appointment to go to hospital for infertility investigations with a view to start IVF.

hammeringinmyhead · 22/10/2018 08:30

I spent a year on the TTC boards. When I say psychological I mean many posters have symptoms in the 2 week wait and then their period comes, not that people who are pregnant are inventing them.

Angelmiracle · 22/10/2018 09:44

@hammeringinmyhead I agree after ttc dc2 for 5 years. I got bfp in July with minimal symptoms - slight burning sensation in right boob very briefly 4 days before period due and also a slight sourness in my mouth which made my jaw feel sore. That was it. Got bfp 10dpo 2days before period due. In June I had backache, increased temperature, nausea, strong urine, strong sense of smell but I went onto have worst period ever!!

poppyseed2 · 22/10/2018 09:51

With all my pregnancies I have started to have symptoms over a week before a positive test / missed period.

I know it's not in my head because with the second we weren't trying, I still had my coil in, and it took me a couple of weeks of saying to DH "I haven't felt this way since when I was pregnant" before the penny dropped and I took a test!

TwittleBee · 22/10/2018 15:15

Been on the conception board for over a year now and the vast majority of women who have symptoms and negative tests end up seeing AF in the end Sad I am included in this. Totally know that PMS causes very similar symptoms to pregnancy too!

It is crazy how your mind can play tricks, or how over analytical of everything you suddenly become when TTC!

TwittleBee · 22/10/2018 15:16

Saying this, I felt like I started getting symptoms at around 5dpo with DS and got a BFP at 8dpo (but it was unplanned and I might have ovulated earlier that month)

JoshMumsnet · 22/10/2018 15:27

Hi,

We got a midwife to go over the most common early signs of pregnancy - hope it's helpful

SharpLily · 22/10/2018 15:34

I have been pregnant six times now (only one child though and currently pregnant with a second), and while I didn't recognise it the first time, it became a very familiar sensation. I've had very distinct, specific symptoms each time, for about a week before testing positive. I had a (male) doctor dismiss the idea that I could know I was pregnant before taking a test or missing a period, but when it's happened that many times and is so distinctive, there's no mistaking it it.

Reastiepeace · 22/10/2018 15:44

Yes, all 3 times I’ve been pg it’s been quite obvious as something very different to normal pmt including unusual tiredness/dizziness and nausea a week before period was due.

sumptoms · 22/10/2018 15:55

I'm not trying to conceive, this is a case of an accident and not taking morning after pill and hoping for the best. I do track ovulation tho and I got a very dark pink line ( not as dark as control like but very very close to it) on the 10th October, I had sex on the 9th October so not sure if my possibility

If I'm pregnant it would be hard ( I already have children) but i would cope with t and manage

powercutie · 22/10/2018 16:02

Both times I've been pregnant, I've felt really nauseous and then run out to get a test because of that. So while I I wasn't actively testing everyday so can't tell you at which point it overlaps, I will def say symptoms can come very early before missed periods or suspicion (for me).

FirstTimeBumps · 22/10/2018 17:06

Heartburn and extremely sore boobs. We were trying and only on second month of attempt, and I'd had an awful cold and we hadn't been up to much so I honestly thought that month was a no go, even got myself a nice red hot bath! The heartburn really gave it away though as pre-pregnancy I never ever suffered from it. Picked a test up in my lunch break and tadah. Almost a week before I was expecting AF. Doctor was amazed I'd managed to find out so early x

WhirlingTurkey · 22/10/2018 19:02

I had cramping before I took as positive test. I didn't test until 16dpo though. They started around 11-12dpo. Obviously at the time I thought they were just the usual pre-period cramps that I used to get each month. However on reflection they weren't quite the same as normal cramps - less achy/painful and more of a pulling feeling. They went on for quite a few weeks into my pregnancy.

A lot of hormonal driven symptoms - sore boobs, headaches etc. would be hard to differentiate between pre-menstrual symptoms IME. I had months when TTC when I had every "pregnancy" symptom going, but of course I wasn't pregnant those months.
