Water breaking

What are everyone’s experiences with their waters breaking. TMI but I went to be loo and when I stood up and sorted out my clothes etc a trickle of water or maybe more urine came out. It was about 10mls but not sure if I just had my bladder express itself again or it’s waters breaking. My first pregnancy I had my waters broken. It was clear as far as I’m aware. I’ve had the odd twinge of pain but no full on contractions. Just feel silly if I have just wet myself... and at work!

Unless your waters are leaking (this is usually fairly constant though I think?) Then that is unlikely to have been your waters. When mine broke it was like the floodgates opened; floor soaking, couldn't put on underwear etc... if it was pee please don't feel embarrassed by it. Your body is full of 'relaxin' when you're pregnant so a little bit if an oops moment is totally normal. I suffer from hg and vomit 4-6 times a day and every time I need to change my clothes afterwards; it's one of the many reasons I can't be at work right now!

WhirlingTurkey · 20/10/2018 12:24

My waters broke and it wasn't a huge gush at all. More of a gradual trickle. I could 100% tell I wasn't peeing myself though. The sensation is very different... this is a bit TMI but it feels like when you have sex without a condom and the semen slides out when you stand up / move about. Or a bit like having a particularly heavy / clotty period. Sorry, all about the nice imagery today!

Definitely different sensation to peeing anyway IME.

How many weeks are you? I was 38+6 when mine started leaking and baby came the next day. I phoned the midwife, went in for assessment / monitoring - they agreed it was my waters and then I was induced the next day as still only in very early labour and they wanted baby out sooner due to infection risk.

I think if you are in any doubt about what it is then you should speak to your midwife and get checked out.

KateTTC123 · 20/10/2018 12:34

@whirlingturkey I had no idea it could be like that; definetly best to get checked out!

Lilbear14 · 20/10/2018 12:47

I was the same as WhirlingTurkey. But at 41 weeks.
Ring your local unit and they will ask you to wear a pad. So they can test the bad to see what the fluid is.

I got up to go for a wee and all this clear water ran down my legs no big dramatic thing so wasn't sure if id wet myself which had never happened before or it was my waters. I rang triage and they said come in in a few hours to check and 8 hours later dd was born!

Mummytoboyxx · 20/10/2018 13:16

Mine broke overnight. Again, it wasn’t a gush, just very damp, and had to wear a pad. It slowly leaked out for the next few hours. Went in to get checked later that day and they confirmed waters had gone. Best to get checked due to the risk of infection. Good luck! X

Mine went in very established labour during a contraction as the midwife came in! It was quite spectacular!

winterwonderly · 20/10/2018 13:29

Mine was a trickle with my first. Went to the loo and then it just kept trickling on and off. I didn't know if it was my waters or not but it turned out it was, and contractions started quite soon after that.

It was completely different with my second, when my waters didn't break until I was in full on labour at the hospital and then it just gushed out!

SB2017 · 20/10/2018 13:52

I’m only 35 weeks so that’s why I don’t think at my waters and just an oops moment but found it so weird to go to the toilet and then more comes out when I stand up. As I say I’ve had a few twinges sonif it continues and gets worse I’ll call the midwife. Just feel a bit embarrassed haha

If you're 35 weeks and water is leaking out when you stand up, you need to call the hospital and speak to the midwives.

KoshaMangsho · 20/10/2018 14:48

That sounds like your waters. If you are 35 weeks you really really need to go to Hospital. You might need some steroids for the baby’s lungs.

KateTTC123 · 20/10/2018 15:20

I was 29 weeks when mine went so 35 isn't too early for it to happen, please go get checked out.

Lostoldusername · 22/10/2018 11:09

How are you getting on OP?

usernotfound0000 · 22/10/2018 12:34

My waters went just like that. You only get the gush if it is your front waters, mine were my hind waters which are more of a trickle. I went in to be checked convinced I would be told I just had a weak bladder but they confirmed it was my waters. I'd keep an eye on it and maybe call your midwife or maternity assessment centre.

SB2017 · 22/10/2018 13:23

So far I’ve had no contractions but I’ve just worked my last weekend shift and it was horrible! So busy and knackering! I have a birthing ball to try and help with some back pain I’ve had for a few weeks and try and move her down a bit

TwittleBee · 22/10/2018 13:49

Yeah if it is still trickling here and there I would go and get it checked out OP just to be safe. DW MWs always see this!

Once my waters broke I had to wear a big pad in my knickers to keep the leaking water at bay until hospital was ready to decide what to do with me (the initial breaking of them was like a tidal wave out of me and all onto DH's side of the bed lol!)

WhirlingTurkey · 26/10/2018 12:22

How are you doing @SB2017? Did you speak to someone?

SB2017 · 26/10/2018 16:49

Hi,
I’m fine, definitely wasn’t my waters breaking. I didn’t speak to anyone in the end apart from other mums. I am feeling a lot of pressure down below so I think things are progressing but I think she will hang in for a lot longer
