13 weeks heart rate

Hey everybody.

I am 13 weeks pregnant and I have a home doppler I bought.

2 weeks ago I used the doppler and the heart rate was a nice strong 162 bpm

However when I used it tonight the heart rate seemed to be slower and showing at roughly 130bpm?

Can someone please put my mind at ease is this normal for the heart rate to change?

Thanks.

Don't trust a home doppler for accurate readings.

snoopy18 · 19/10/2018 19:29

Wouldn’t use a home doppler, it can really be wrong.

xsmx18 · 19/10/2018 19:29

Okay, I'm just abit paranoid as its been a steady heart rate and it sounded alot slower tonight but maybe its not accurate tonight then.

Thanks

Home dopplers aren’t recommended as they can be so misleading.
They’re likely to make you feel as you are. Or falsely reassured (there are awful stories when women have ignored concerning symptoms because the heart rate was seemingly fine from the Doppler)
I’d honestly avoid using it.

But for now, text or call your midwife for professional advice.
Hope you’re ok.

Heart rate is not usually monitored that early in pregnancy so I’m not sure what is normal for that stage, sorry.

OK, I had my scan this week and she said everything was absolutely perfect so at least that is reassuring,
I will give the doppler a miss from now on.
Thanks for the advice everyone 😊

I had the midwife listen to my baby's heartbeat on wednesday at my 16 week appointment and the rhythm was irregular so was sent to the early pregnancy unit where i had a scan. It was still very irregular so i was to have another scan 48 hours later with a different doctor. When i went yesterday all was fine and dr said its normal for irregular heartbeats which usually correct themselves so a change in heart rate might be normall too as long as its not too low or too high xx

Bin it. This is exactly why you shouldn't have one at home

And a normal foetal heart rate is 130-160. Possibly baby was asleep the second time.

beela · 20/10/2018 12:28

I agree, bin it. They should only be used by trained professionals who understand the readings. So many sad stories of people who have been wrongly reassured by using one at home and consequently not sought medical attention until it was too late.

laurenluke2017 · 20/10/2018 13:45

I had a home doppler and was shown how to use by my midwife. However don't use it if you haven't been shown. Cos you could be picking up 1 the babys heart rate. Or 2. It could be the umbilicord or the placenta. So you don't want false reassurance. If you are worried call your local MAU. But you should need to worry about heart rate / movement until at least 20 weeks.

sirmione16 · 20/10/2018 13:48

It's probably placenta you're hearing, unlikely the baby's heartbeat is possible to be heard on a home Doppler that early. I have one I use for fun now and then just to see if I can hear him - I'm 26 weeks and the other day couldn't find it at all then later in day I got it fine. You can't rely on a reading from them, it's just nice if you can pick it up so certainly don't use it if it's going to worry you when you can't find it

xsmx18 · 20/10/2018 14:15

Thanks for everyone's advice I will give it a by using it.
I'm just a worrier 😔
Thanks everyone x
