Painful BH

Wondering if anyone has had these. Legitimately thought I was going into early labour last night but timed it and didn't end up with another so decided it was more than likely BH. Spoke to midwife this morning and she said it definitely sounds like it with me being 29 weeks and as long as there are no other concerning signs I'm okay and to call back if there are. My question is for anyone who's had painful BH was it a one off or was it with every single one, and how often can I expect them. I had nausea with it and pain under my ribs and it was quite scary (although I think it was added to by the concern it might be premature labour). Anyone who can shed some light on if I should expect this going forward

I was always told that if BH were painful then you should get them checked out - might be worth giving triage a call?

I had what I thought were painful BH and rang the midwife to explain the pains...she said they were fixing pains of little ones head getting in position. They made my eyes water! I had these first at 36 weeks and have had them on and off since, still no appearance or any problems just not very pleasant! I felt like very strong and stabbing cramps in my very low abdomen towards my pubic bone, and I had back ache at the same time. Hope this helps xx

I had painful BH with both pregnancies. Started from around the stage you are (I could feel them before, but it wasn't painful until later on). Some days were worse than others. And I generally took it as a sign to slow down, drink plenty (they were worse if I hadn't had many fluids) and rest for a bit.

Still worth getting checked to be on the safe side if it happens again.

@MonkeyToucher I've spoken to MW and as baby is moving as usual, I've had nothing since and no other concerning symptoms she said they definitely sound like BH and to call her back if any more happen which they haven't since last night. I have read that they can be painful, and MW said that it may be position of baby which is making them such. Just wondering if I should expect all my BH to be like this going forward.

@AshBluex baby is head down but facing outwards, and I'm only 29+2 so hopefully I've still got time to turn this one around so he or she isn't back to back before they take up permanent residence in one position. They weren't as much standby and crampy, I've had rib pain since about fifteen weeks so thinking that was why it was so painful up top and hoping that when baby drops that will ease up and labour won't be like that (honestly I'm planning for a home birth and last night made me seriously question my choices haha)

Thank you both for your advice so far x

@OnceUponATimeInAmerica so there's a chance they'll be painful going forwards gah! I'll give my midwife a shout if they happen again. Tbh I have been wiped out the last week or so so maybe I should slow down. I haven't had them, or at least hadn't noticed them, prior to this x

I had them from about 22/24 weeks with DS1. He arrived at 36 weeks posterior. Also with DS2 27 weeks. DD not one - 41.5 weeks.

May I respectfully suggest that you make an appointment with your GP or another appropriately qualified dr for a face to face consultation rather than rely on the advice of a mudwife/nurse forming a judgement based on a telephone call.

FirstTimeBumps · 19/10/2018 14:24

@OhTheRoses I've got antenatal classes tomorrow held at my midwife centre so I'll give it another mention tomorrow. An appointment with a Dr I won't get seen for at least 2 weeks and I'm back to where I was pre-panic yesterday (baby kicking as usual, feel fine, no pain) so there wouldn't be much they could evaluate on unless I was mid-contraction when I had the appointment anyway. If it was to happen again I'd be straight on the phone and it sounds like they would then bring me in for monitoring. I've got a midwife appointment coming in next week so I'll be seen quicker than I would if I even tried to make a GP appointment x

I had very painful Bh with my last baby and twice I ended up in delivery thinking they was the real thing, and that was my 5th child 🙈 they started at 29 weeks and I had them constantly (sometimes not as painful but still made me question them) she was born a day late, and when the real thing did start I remembered "yep this is it" lol

RedDrink · 19/10/2018 16:03

I had a few painful BH here and there, nothing came of them. Then I had considerable discomfort when little madam got stuck for a couple of days sideways while she was trying to move from breech to head down position at 36 weeks.

I didn't think it was abnormal for them to hurt a bit and was the reason why many first time Mum's end up at the hospital thinking they're in labour.

beccii161016 · 19/10/2018 18:10

I know it's said the BH aren't painful but I definitely had instances of them with DS that took my breath away and i genuinely thought it might be labour starting!

Always go in to triage if you're in pain and having tightenings as it's always best to be safe but BH can certainly be painful in my experience!
