Hi,

First time mum having a sweep on Wednesday, currently 39+2.

Any positive stories? Advice? What actually happens? I'm desperate for baby to come as I'm really uncomfortable!

TIA :) xx

You know when you're rooting about in the bottom of your handbag for your keys? It felt a bit like that's what the consultant was doing. It was slightly uncomfortable but not painful. Oh, and it didn't work, I'm sorry to say.

@alex1616 I had a sweep done by a consultant, she said to every 7 women that have a sweep 1 will go into labour, and that I would DEFINITELY be that 1, my cervix was soft and already dilated a touch she said I'd have my baby within the next couple of day ..... I was induced a week later, sorry

On the plus size though it didn't hurt !

I’m definitely not having a sweep.

I’m 26+5 with number 2.

They only really work if you’re ready anyway. In which case why interfere?

Smurfybubbles · 18/10/2018 17:09

Didn't work for me and I found it quite invasive, I think the midwife I had was particularly thorough. Like the pp said it was like rooting around a handbag for your keys they wanted to do a second one but I refused! Not sore just uncomfortable.

They work wonders for some women I just had a particularly stubborn baby, he eventually was born by c section 11 days overdue.

Interestingly I believe in Germany they don’t do them at all.

Thanks for the replies everyone! It's nice to hear others thoughts and stories! :)

I’ve had one with both DDs. Both mid morning, fully/mostly effaced and 2cm dialated in both cases. Both DDs arrived the night immediately after the sweep!

I am not sure if I just respond well to sweeps or if my midwife has the magic touch.
Needless to say I am a fan of sweeps!

Hey op, I have had a sweep with each of my pregnancies. The first was at 39+2 I think. Had it roughly at lunch time, and thought nothing more of it, but late that night I went into labour, and 1hr 30 mins later DS1 was here Grin.
Second time it took a couple of days to work, but I was only 38 weeks at that point. Still seemed to work though, but as someone else stated, I think if baby is ready it will work, but not a moment before.

alex1616 · 19/10/2018 06:06

Again, thanks for the replies guys :)

I've woken up at about 4am with what I think is contractions! Been going on for over an hour now. My first pregnancy so hard to tell what's normal and what's not! x

I was 11 days overdue and had a sweep. It was a bit nervous about it but to be dead honest, in my experience it wasn't painful - it was just an odd sensation.

My baby came the next day so I do think it had some benefit for me.

twinky06 · 19/10/2018 07:54

Just saw your later post about contractions! Eeeek! Good luck!!

alex1616 · 19/10/2018 08:13

Thanks everyone!

Spoken with hospital and they've told me to wait it out at home for now. Contractions are lasting about 40 seconds or so every 5-6 mins now xx
