Can I have an opinion please....................

Re Big Babies......................

As you are all aware, I hope it won't be big....... because my last 2 were. Thing is, I delivered them both no problems, BUT and it's a big but (excuse pun) ahum, I developed LOADS of problems with my bladder after having DS2. I had to have a laparoscopy and cystoscopy to explore what was going on, it turned out that I had developed Irritable Bladder Syndrome, which is similar to IBS (which I also have). I have it mostly under control, by changing my diet and avoiding orange juice etc.

The thing I was wondering was, could delivering another big baby start it all off again. It really was SO bad at the time. I spent nearly 3 years feeling like I was constantly busting for a wee, no relief when I went. I'm genuinely terrified that it may start again.

They're going to perform a sizing scan at 32 weeks. (They did this with DS2 and predicted an 8lb baby, he was 10lb 4oz ) I'm wondering whether to ask to be induced at 38 weeks?????????????

Would there be any risk to the baby at 38 weeks.

Also, can't remember exactly, but I do know that babies put on a lot of weight in the last few weeks. How much though in the last 2?

babies do put on weight the last 4 weeks, but remember , a full term pregnancy can be anywhere within 37 - 42 weeks
on the whole, 38 weeks should be absolutely fine...but if your body isn't ready for induction, can be a long drawn out process....the bishops score for a realistic chance of succesful induction is 5 or more......i'm pretty sure the NICE guidelines don;t recommend induction early purely due to size of the baby...but i;m sujre you can discuss with your obs

also, can you see a bladder specialist too> find out what the chances are of the birth excacerbating things

I had bowel problems after my first baby. She wasn't huge but I did have rotational forceps. I was told this often causes bowel/bladder problems. 2 normal deliveries followed, including a 10lber 4 years ago! No re-occurrence of the bowel problems.

You might want to consider the impact of induction and your chances of intervention for the birth.

I'd wait and see what the scan turns up and seek advice from as many sources as possible at that point

i got induced at 38 weeks with ds and dd2 dut to pih.both inductions took 3 whole days and alot of intervention.i was told when having dd3 that clinical guidelines had changed and they wouldnt induce at 38 weeks unless i develpoed very severe pre-eclampsia.i was induced at 39 weeks in the end.

a friend of mine was induced at 38 weeks due to spd,and it took a week.

Can only tell you what happened to me with regards induction.

dd1 induced at T+14 (though I suspect was actually T+7 as I know exactly when I conceived) started off on the Thurs eve finally delivered Sat morning - so long drawn out affair. 7lb6oz

dd2 induced at T+16 started me off at 12ish delivered later that evening. 10lb6oz (and I measured small for dates......)

dd3 induced at T (so equivalent for me being induced at 37/38 weeks tbh as always go over). Started off the Tues morning 8am, by the Wed lunch time I had been pain all that time and only dilated to about 2-3 cm!!! Did I controlled ARM and at this point told chances of non c-section were about 50%!!!! Delivered her about 6 hours later 9lb2oz

dd4 induced at T+14 started off at lunchtime delivered late that evening. 9lb10oz

So from that I would just say being induced early is very long winded, painful, can take days and the chances of delivery without further intervention are pretty low.

I was induced at 38 weeks for the opposite reason - baby not growing.

It was fine and quick. TBH I don't think this was expected by mws - took em a bit by suprise (even I had sent my dh cos I thought he stank and it was going to take ages )

Agree that at 38 wks baby is considered term so no real danger / problems there. But yeah - the induction might go on a bit. all the best

MuffinMclay · 15/06/2007 14:06

I was induced at 38 weeks with pre-eclampsia, and it all happened rather quickly. I had the gel applied at 7pm, was in labour by 2am, and ds popped out at 7am.

Hopeitwontbebig · 15/06/2007 17:32

Hmm, didn't realise that it might take a lot longer to deliver if induced at 38 wks. I was induced with DS2 when he was 4 days over, it was very quick.

So I guess that doesn't have any bearing on how quick it would be at 38 weeks?

HIWBB - my ds was induced at T+12 (their dates), T+5 (my dates) - it took just over 100 hours from start to C section.
It was hell.

Risk with induction is that you may end up with more intervention than you've otherwise had.

Is it definite that the birth caused the bladder probs? Sounds horrible - would your doc for the bladder probs (sorry, don't know tech. term!) be of any help here?

Hopeitwontbebig · 15/06/2007 17:42

No the birth wasn't 'officially' linked to my bladder problems. It just seemed a bit of an odd coincidence that it started a few weeks after the birth.

I was induced at 38 weeks as baby was big. I was already 2 cm dilated (as it was 3rd pregnancy) so they set drip up and broke my waters. It was a lot more painful for me compared to 1st 2 births. he was 10lb so glad that i had been induced.

had babay no.d at 40 weeks, was induced again as he was meant to be big. Worst birth ever, took hours and hours and had to push him out at 8cms dilated in the end and cervix just gave up on dilating and baby in mega distress. He was only 8lb 5ozs.

Had 2 c-sections with other pregnancies as the doctor said i could never be induced again due to heavy heavy bleeding and PPh's

Wasn't a nice time for me, but everyone is different. Induction is fine if you are due to naturally go into labour soon anyway.

hana · 15/06/2007 20:05

the baby wouild be fine
troule is that they may not be ready to be born and the induction process may take a while

I was induced at 36 weeks with one of mine, it took 4 days to work , was truly awful time. I coulndl't leave the hospital. Once labour was established it was fine, no complications, it just took a long time to start

MKG · 15/06/2007 20:40

I had my first baby after being induced at 38 weeks. Everything was fine, basically one thing to remember is the state of your cervix. If it's ripe then an induction will be fine, if not it may not go that well at 38 weeks.
