two yolk sacs

Hi all,

I have had a roller coaster start to this pregnancy as some of you may have seen previous posts. Turns out there were two yolk sacs at my scan yesterday! However, only one of them currently has a baby with a strong heartbeat - the other one is smaller and appears not to have started developing yet. Does anyone have any experience with this? The scanner said they would be identical as they are from the same egg, however it seemed she sort of prepared me for the smaller one not developing 'don't feel too upset if you can, as identical twins are a high risk' and also never 100 percent confirmed this is what the spotting was - it could also have been heavy implantation due to two of them. I am not being unrealistic and over joyed that one of them has a lovely strong heartbeat. But I have not personally met anyone who had this? I have heard of vanishing twin syndrome of course but just any experiences or opinions would be great! xx

I have no advice or words of wisdom for this, I just wanted to bump your post Smile

thank you - I'm assuming it can't be very common! really have had a rollercoaster start but yeah hopefully I will get some proper answers at next scan x

My best friend has a similar situation. Her yolk sac is empty but they have told her to come back in a couple of weeks as she might not be as far along as she thought. I had never really heard of it, but hope all goes well with both you and my friend.

How far along are you, OP?

thanks for sharing I was baffled when she said. she actually put me back 4 days so only 6 weeks x

I know it's easy said but try not to worry too much as, even in Singleton pregnancies, it's common for babies to develop at slightly different paces. And 6 weeks is a notoriously tricky week for scans as it's generally stated that they expect to see a heartbeat but this isn't always the case and I've known women who haven't seen a heartbeat until 8 weeks but worried to death over their 6 weeks scan.

Wishing you and your twins all the best! I hope the next scan can put your mind at rest Thanks

Hi Hopex3 I had a similar situation at my 6 week scan. I had two yolk sacs but the other one didn't develop. At 8 weeks I was terrified when I had bright red bleeding but the scan showed that the one baby was fine and the heartbeat was strong. It was terrifying as I had suffered a miscarriage at 8 weeks previously. It was bittersweet as I realised I had lost the other one. I hope everything works out for you.

I think that's what I'm a little nervous about cos I had two early scans due to bleeding - first scan picked up one yolk sac abdominally but second scan was internally and a few days later - heartbeat and another yolk sac found so not sure if the bleeding was heavy implantation cos of two of them or if sadly one of them didn't make it. so grateful for the one that has a strong heartbeat though of course. I guess we will have to wait and see for the other one 🤞❤😋
