I'm 37+1, GDM, slightly big baby and I'm very petite. Nervous about induction. I can't find much in the scientific literature about how successful these are. So, please tell me if you have had an induction and:

  1. First baby? Second?
  2. How many weeks?
  3. Pessary, drip or both?
  4. Needed epidural?
  5. Did they use forceps or ventouse?
  6. Did you have episiotomy or tear?
  7. Did they need to convert to caesarean?
  8. How much did the baby weigh?

Thanks guys!

  1. First
  2. On my due date for the pessary, 40+4 for the drip due to waiting for a slot on delivery suite (baby was born 40+5)
  3. Pessary (Dilapan non-hormonal pessary, rather than Propess, on a clinical trial). Then the drip once my waters had been broken
  4. Yes, after 8 hours on the drip including 4 hours of contractions, the last hour of which were unbearable, I still had not dilated more than 2cm so decided enough was enough. I dilated to 10cm within 2 hours of having the epidural. I went in saying I didn't want an epidural but it was the best decision I ever made
  5. Ventouse - the baby was in distress so there was no time to wait for the epidural to wear off and I had to start pushing but couldn't feel anything so needed help
  6. Both
  7. No

GlitteryFluff · 15/10/2018 13:21
  1. First baby
2.41+5 (but went on for days so he didn't arrive til 42+1)
  1. Pessary, they wouldn't do drip til I dilated. I didn't dilate.
  2. No
  3. No
  4. No
  5. Yes/No was my decision, they would have repeated pessarys.
  6. 11lb7oz and undiagnosed breech.

Basically the induction didn't work, after a few days when they wanted to keep doing stuff to me I refused anymore things shoved up me and had a section.

I worry about what would have happened if they actually managed to kickstart labour with a whopper of that size who was also breech.

Second baby I refused induction, had another section.

This sounds like the best so far. how did you not tear? Did you do floor exercises and perineal massage?

  1. First and second babies. I'll answer separately.

First baby

  1. 41+4 weeks
  2. Pessary, waters broken, drip
  3. Tried to go without epidural, but after 6 hours of back to back contactions and I'd only dilated to 3cm I gave up. After the epidural it was great
  4. No ventouse or forceps
  5. Episiotomy, because muscles were too tight and thick, probably from sport
  6. No
  7. 8lb or 3.62kg

Second baby

  1. 37+2
  2. Waters broken (did nothing), drip
  3. Had epidural with drip, firstly because it was safer for baby as it improves blood flow in IUGR, and secondly because I'd been through so much stress in the pregnancy I didn't want to deal with labour pain too
  4. They were going to use ventouse due to fetal distress, but he was out before they could set up
  5. First degree tear
  6. No c section, despite low threshold for conversion
  7. 4lb 14 or 2.23kg

  1. First baby
  2. 41+6
  3. Pessary
  4. Would've liked epidural but didn't end up getting admitted to delivery suite until too late, then ended up getting a spinal block
  5. Forceps (baby's heart rate lowered so they wanted her out quick)
  6. Episiotomy
  7. No caesarean
  8. 8lbs 12
Theworldisfullofgs · 15/10/2018 13:32

N/a
N/a
Caesarean
4.5kg

coragreta · 15/10/2018 13:58

2nd baby
40+12
Arm then drip
Yes epidural
No forceps
1st degree tear (had a 3 with first)
No c-section
8lb 14.

Was actually fine after the epidural. I don't understand why people are against them. No one would just breath through heart surgery or something.
