Hi all, I'm a first time mum and currently 19 +2. I've had at least 7/8 bh contractions today. I think I had one last week too. But today, it feels like a lot for how early I am...

Calling the midwife in the morning but just checking here for some reassurance that this is normal. I just hope it doesn't carry on like this!!

Any advice?

Obviously meant to be Braxton not Brixton!!!

Sorry I'm not much help OP but might be worth posting in "The Marchers" thread.. think it's onto thread 6 now.... all ladies around similar weeks to you may be helpful?

physicskate · 14/10/2018 22:07

Thanks!! Posted there too!!

Congrats @physicskate - didn’t realise you were expecting. I remember seeing you a lot on the conception boards :)

Could it be stretching pains? I got a lot of those around that time. My BH just make my tummy go lumpy or hard.

Your midwife should be able to reassure you tomorrow :)

physicskate · 15/10/2018 07:38

Definite tightenings - my uterus went rock hard on each occasion and I get the same weird feeling. Others suggested dehydration - only had just over a litre yesterday!! So I'm hoping it's that and my mw can reassure me!!

And thanks @Stephisaur! I still can't really believe that our ivf worked. It doesn't always feel real after the years of infertility...

Congratulations on your pregnancy. Have you managed to speak to the midwife? I have the opposite problem in that I'm full-term tomorrow and have had no BH so far, think my baby may be pretty comfy in there!

physicskate · 15/10/2018 14:38

I did speak to my midwife. She said it was 'concerning' as this is very early. Fantastic. She thinks it might be a uti and said to get in touch with my gp if I show any other signs of it (nope and I've had several). She also said if they become more frequent (they haven't) or more intense that I should phone triage.

Still getting one every couple of hours.

Not sure if I should phone triage as I'm getting confused about movements now too!! Not sure if kicks have been happening in the same cluster as they have been for the last week or so...

Also heard about a colleague's miscarriage today. Today is shite.

Fingers crossed it's something urine or hydration related.

I went through a phase at about 18 weeks of getting what felt like they might be BH when emptying my bladder. It wasn't a UTI and it stopped happening a couple of weeks or so later, so I'm not sure if it was dehydration or just to do with my uterus growing in some way. At 23+2 that's completely stopped. It was a bit unsettling, though, so definitely keep in touch with midwife, etc. I think some people do get BH very early though and it has no effect on the term of their pregnancy.

I think if you're in any doubt then best to phone. The worse that will happen if there's nothing wrong is that you have to spend a few hours at the hospital getting checked.

SoyDora · 15/10/2018 14:57

Everyone has BH throughout pregnancy, some people feel them, some people don’t. They’re happening regardless! I am on my third pregnancy and have never felt one.
If you’re worried then get checked out, but it is normal to have BH at all stages of pregnancy.

magpie24 · 15/10/2018 15:26

I would phone triage for peace of mind. You wouldn't be wasting anyone's time. And also at 19 weeks I wouldn't be worrying at all about the pattern of movements as some people haven't even felt their baby by that stage.

CountessVonBoobs · 15/10/2018 15:45

I wouldn't worry any about movements, there's not likely to be any discernible pattern at 19 weeks. The Braxton Hicks sound fairly normal to me as well tbh. TMI - I always used to get them after orgasm even quite early in pregnancy and what you're describing does sound like BH. Dehydration can definitely trigger them as can overdoing it on activity a bit.

physicskate · 15/10/2018 15:53

Haven't had sex since a month before conception (ivf). Now definitely not dehydrated. Been pottering about the house the last two days...

And I've been feeling movements every day (early morning and evening with a few around midday) for three weeks....

I feel like I'm talking myself to calling them!!! But actually you telling me it's all normal is helpful - but you're sorta the first to say so!!!

CountessVonBoobs · 15/10/2018 16:01

A quick Google suggests that it's pretty normal to feel BHs from 16 weeks even in your first pregnancy, and in fact that most people are having them from the first trimester but simply don't feel them to begin with.

If you're really stressed do call triage, but I know that my hospital (specialist, well known maternity and teaching hospital) didn't monitor women for reduced movements until 26+ weeks. Baby is stil small and very mobile and can easily turn right around.

hoping2018 · 15/10/2018 16:10

I'm 24 weeks and have been having these fairly regularly since 16 weeks. Had five within a couple of hours yesterday morning - I seem to get more in the morning?

Baby otherwise moving well (I don't think my baby loves very regularly at 19 weeks?)

Still don't like them and find them concerning every time!

Obviously go with what the midwife says and check no urine infection (I'm prone to UTIs so have dips and check mine regularly) and any other advice she has.

But wanted to reassure you I get lots and have done since earlier than you! (Also ivf oregnancy)

physicskate · 15/10/2018 16:16

@hoping2018 - that is extremely helpful!! I phoned triage as I had two in 5 mins and they said paracetamol and warm bath. If they get into a regular pattern, I'm to go to a and e, which I obviously want to avoid...

I just want to not feel them like 'normal' people!!

Been a stressful day with some other news, so really appreciate the replies from actual people, and not just doctor google!!

Darkstar4855 · 15/10/2018 16:34

I started feeling them a lot at around 26 weeks - they seemed to come on very suddenly one day and I was a bit freaked out that it was a sign of impending premature labour because I was overdoing things! But nothing bad happened and I have had them regularly ever since, more when I am active or dehydrated. I have had them a good dozen or so times a day ever since and am now 33 weeks. I am totally used to them now and they don’t bother me at all.

I have been advised that as long as there’s no bleeding or signs of waters going, baby is moving, they are not getting increasingly stronger and more frequent and they are not painful then it’s fine.

Fingers crossed all is well for you too.

hoping2018 · 15/10/2018 17:53

Hi @physicskate , as per pp I've reassured myself baby is moving, no bleeding etc and here not regular. Unfortunately I also seem to have spd so have had a lot of pain.

At 18 weeks I had an extra scan due to spd pain and they wanted to check my ovaries post ivf (got 22 eggs) but all was fine. Had loads of Braxton Hicks around then too by the hospital reassured me it was all normal

physicskate · 15/10/2018 19:33

Oh wow - I had 18 eggs collected and have some sort of pelvic girdle pain (finally after weeks of moaning have just managed to get a physio referral!!). Not sure if it's spd or what but it's hurt to turn over in bed for the last 8 weeks or so and pushing a shopping cart is agony!! But that's another saga!!

The bath and paracetamol has really helped!! No more contractions (touch wood).

Also today I found out a colleague who had IVF has just miscarried so I was also really upset about that (and how she will feel when she sees me with my bump)... so you have my endless thanks @hoping2018!!!! Hearing about an actual person who feels them this early has definitely helped!! Thank you all!!!

Redrosebelle · 15/10/2018 20:17

I remember you from the conception boards and you helped me to understand some blood results! I was really upset at the time. So thank you! I’m currently 34 weeks and excited for you, congratulations on your pregnancy xx

physicskate · 15/10/2018 21:29

Thank you!! Congrats for you as well!! You must be getting excited for the arrival!!

OP posts:
hoping2018 · 15/10/2018 21:42

@physicskate I've got a silk nightie (least attractive thing ever) which is helping me turn in bed, just changed to having shopping delivered and my husband just did the vacuuming for the first time in a veeeery long time (he works longer hours so I normally do all the cleaning!) my midwife referred me today - 3/12 wait for physio Confused thanks nhs!!

One of my friends had a chemical two weeks ago after ivf. I feel so bad for her but I know I'm not the person she needs to hear from at the moment.

Hope things settle down x

Redrosebelle · 16/10/2018 07:27

I am excited.. and very stressed! Had some issues with iron levels and now may be going in for an iron infusion. I really do feel poorly! Spd is awful too - so fully sympathise. Pregnancies are SUCH blessings but stressful aren’t they!
