Midwife appointments? Help!

This is my first baby and I've not really got much of an idea about when things should happen to be honest. I had my booking in appointment with the midwife on 3 August, and I've since had my 12 week scan at the hospital and everything was looking good. I didn't have the tests they offer at the hospital to test for Downs etc as I had the NIPT test done separately, again fine.

I'm now just over 19 weeks and I have my 20 week scan a week on Tuesday.

When am I supposed to see the midwife again? I've called the midwife number and left several messages but I haven't heard back from them. However, I don't know if I should have seen them by now or not? I'm based in Warrington in case it is a regional thing.

You should have seen your Midwife at 16 weeks, and then it’s 25 weeks (with your 20 week scan in the middle). Not sure how it works at your hospital but I see someone after my scans to discuss them.

Do you have paper notes? There should be a little timeline of when to expect appointments.

I had a midwife appointment at 16 weeks (between 12 and 20 week scans) then again at 24 weeks. She made the 16 week appointment at my booking in appointment but to be honest apart from checking urine sample and blood pressure it wasn't that informative so I don't think it's a big deal you missed it. Make sure you get a 24 week appointment though

Thank you both! There is a timeline in the notes, but the midwife was scribbling all around it in the booking in session, and to be honest I just found it all a bit overwhelming as I was frantically trying to scribble notes down! My fault I know, but thanks for letting me know I'm right to be concerned about whether I had missed one (although it doesn't sound like the appointment would have been too detailed!) I'll keep chasing on the midwife number and hopefully someone will return my calls at some point!

I'm so used to being in full control of everything at home and work, and so this all feels a bit loosely goosey to me, and especially when I can't actually get in touch with a midwife either! Confused

Where I am, you have to book your own midwife appointments (they tell you when) but can do it through your GP surgery. Obviously it might not be the same everywhere, but worth calling to check.

My midwife books my next appointment each time I see her and writes it in the front of my notes. I see her at my local GP surgery but had a home visit at 16 weeks, then 4 weekly appointments from 24 weeks.

It sounds like you might have slipped through the cracks so I would suggest if you can’t get hold of the community midwife team it might be worth trying the antenatal clinic at the hospital on Monday and seeing if they can help.

I always book my next appointment during my current appointment - so booked in for my 16 weeks at booking in, 25 weeks at my 16 week... etc... so then it's clear to both of us when things happen.

Could you book your appointment through the gp surgery or hospital? Try ringing them too??

Not a huge amazing unit happened at 16 weeks - went over bloods from booking in and took my body mostly!!

Thanks all! I think I needed some reassurance that I wasn't hounding them unnecessarily about appointments as I'm sure they are really busy people. You have now given me that, so i will follow up with the surgery directly tomorrow morning and if I get nowhere, the ante natal clinic at the hospital. I'm finding it all a bit random to be honest!

Good job you lovely lot are here to help Smile
