High risk triple blood test results-Help

Jossiejump · 14/06/2007 14:56

I'm 37, have just been told that my results are a risk of 1 in 55, the average for my age is 1 in 250. Whilst I know that it means I've got a 54 in 55 chance of it being ok, can anyone talk to me please.
I've had 3 m/cs in the past year so don't want amniocentisis, DH and I have said that we wouldn't abort if the test came out high risk. I have 2 x DSs aged 6 and 3

Jossie ? hon, firstly I am so sorry that you are having more stress secondly, I really feel for you. DH and I are currently discussing the tests and wondering if we should have any at all because, and this is our own personal opinion, even if we went as far as an amnio (which we are very reluctant to do after a MC and given the stage of the pg it is performed) or a detailed scan, you can never know for sure what the situation is and we don?t feel that without certainty we could do anything but continue. We know someone who went through every test and was told her baby was at very high risk for spina bifida, he was absolutely fine. Whilst I do appreciate that there are those that aren?t ? I guess it all comes down to what ultimate decisions you would take and if none, why go any further and put yourself through the stress? I hope this does help, it?s just my thoughts and just talking but I just wanted to lend support. Thinking of you and praying for all to be fine

Hi Jossie.

Sorry for your distress. Have posted for you on
the 'Pregnancy after mc thread'.

ThomCat · 14/06/2007 15:31

Hi Jossie

Well if you aren't going to have an amnio, which I think is great, and you know you'd never abort, I;d just sit back and try and relax tbh. Maybe do a bit of looking into what having a chil with DS is like, and I can help you there if you like, as can plenty of others. For now all I can say is that i have a 5 yr old DD called Charlotte, aka Lottie who has Down's. She's utterly fabulous, my pride and joy, the sunshine in all our lives, and I'm very lucky to have hr. Having a child with DOWN'S SYNDROME IS HAVING A CHILD, WHO HAPPENS TO HAVE dOWN'S SYNDROEM!

i'M HERE TO TALK AND HELP IF YOU NEED ME.

Agghh, sorry about the CAPs!

ThomCat · 14/06/2007 15:31

Oh and sorry, I meant to say congratulations on your pregnancy

lizziemun · 14/06/2007 16:44

Josiejump,

congratulations on your pregnancy.

i can only tell you about my experience. I am also 37 i had a m/cs last june after 18 ttc, when i fell pg again after another 6months ttc we decided that i wouldn't have an amnio as we decided the risk of m/c was to high and it wouldn't change what we do (ie we would not terminate).

My doctors do not do the triple test if you will no have further test. I am now 29weeks the scan at 21 weeks didn't show any probelms.

I don't know if this helps you but we have decided just to go with what happens.

ThomCat · 14/06/2007 16:48

Congrats to you too lizziemum. i'm 26 weeks. Hope you're feeling ok and enjoying your pregnancy

RIELOVESBACARDI · 14/06/2007 16:49

i had an aminio with my last baby cos she was no 7 and needed to know it was not as bad as i imagined and came back with not having ds. were your dates right when you had your blood test???

Jossiejump · 14/06/2007 16:59

Thankyou for your messages, the midwife counsellor has just confirmed that I'm low risk for spina bifida, but high risk for DS. Just knocked sideways as I half expected a high risk, just not that high

Yes , my DH is especially calm, he's saying, well we're not doing amnio or termination, so we'll just have to wait. I just want a magic wand to fast forward me to November. What detailed scan did you push for? WAs it the 20 week one early?

With regards to this high risk low risk stuff, I was low risk with DD1 and she was born with DS and I was high risk with DD2 and she doesn't.

ThomCat · 15/06/2007 16:29

It's also worth bearing in mind that only around one in every 1000 babies born in the UK will have Down?s syndrome.
And there are only about 60,000 people in the whole of the UK with the condition.

So just keep these things in mind and try and not get too stressed.

Have a look at my profile pics for photos of Lottie.
She has her moments, she's a proper pickle but she's easier to look after than my DD who doesn't have DS!

The fear on the anticipation is so much worse than the reality.

Lottie has enhanced all the lives of the people who know her and our corner of the world is definitley a better place for having her in it.

I'll keep checking in and am hapy to chat to you about any worries you might have.

Try and keep calm, that baby needs his or her mummy to not be stressed.

Love to oyu, TC x

Thankyou Loopy and Thomcat-you've given me good advice and lots to think about, especially about the risk decisions with your DC Thomcat. I will push for an earlier scan as I've read they can be done from 18 weeks, mine is due at 20 weeks.
