WWYD-gluten intolerance

Looking for advice.
I have bad gluten intolerance. I react badly as soon as I have gluten. When I first got these symptoms I was tested for coeliac disease and it was negative. So I was then referred to a dietician who said it was an intolerance. That was about 3 years ago. My symptoms were bloating/pain/tiredness/constipation mostly, so these could also be IBS symptoms as I occasionally also get a bad stomach when I'm very stressed.
Earlier this year I got "glutened" over a long period of time (I was eating something daily I was told was GF, turns out if wasn't!). I felt terrible throughout the time, and my doctor retested me and it came back negative again (she actually did a lot of blood tests and said they all appear very healthy which was reassuring).

So, I'm pregnant. About 2 weeks ago I accidentally ate something with gluten in it. No reaction at all! So, a week later I tried it out and ate a sandwich (it was heaven!!!). Again, absolutely no reaction. If anything, I feel better than I have in ages.
The last time I tried was a week ago. Now, I'm massively craving a pizza. I've not had a takeaway in so long!!! Am I really stupid to go for it? I know eating gluten with coeliac can be dangerous to baby, but doctors have previously said it's likely to be a bad intolerance. I definitely wouldn't go back to eating it daily (just incase I feel rough, but once/twice a month?)

Any tips?

Could you not have a gluten free one?

DannyWallace · 12/10/2018 19:34

@dementedpixie I do usually, but let's face it, it's not real pizza 😂.
Definitely doesn't satisfy any craving!

I've heard so many times of people's intolerances getting better over time, I guess I'm just hoping that's happened to me

My IBS(gluten is my kryptonite!) disappears when I’m pregnant. Came back about a month post-birth. Not saying you’re totally safe to eat as much as you want, but can’t hurt to try! Bon apetit!

I stopped reacting to gluten when pregnant and have been able to eat it in moderation since. I feel like pregnancy somewhat cured me! I think my immune system stopped responding in the same way. It was so lovely to start eating all my favourite treats again. I was very cautious (like you) initially and built up to eating it daily by 7 months!

I had a severe dairy allergy for 10 years pre pregnancy. I couldn’t consume it at all as it would cause an allergic reaction. Interestingly following my first pregnancy I accidentally ate something containing milk. I was FINE! So tentatively tested myself over the next few weeks and my allergy has gone. Apparently this can happen in pregnancy 🤷‍♀️ That first hot chocolate was just heaven, after 10 years of total abstinence.
Perhaps this has happened with you! Let’s hope so x

dannywallace do you mind me asking about your pre pregnancy symptoms please? I know its off topic but I am also suffering with exactly what you have described and I feel absolutely horrendous after eating bread/pizza etc when you say you had pain, are you able to describe it to me? Was it in a certain place, constant, stabbing or dull? Sorry for the questions but I've been to the doctor already about bad abdominal pain - had a scan which came back clear but it's since getting worse and more often, along with the bloating, absolutely exhausted and constipation, I'm starting to think it could be food related. I've also read that having a baby could be a trigger for starting an intolerance. Whether that's true or not?! I basically just need to push myself to go back to gp but I feel stupid not knowing how to describe what I'm feeling! Thanks for any info!.

My dairy intolerance eased when I was pregnant. It was really odd!

QueenOfCatan · 12/10/2018 20:10

I'm the same when pregnant. When not pregnant I can have half a bit of bread before bloating and the next day symptoms affect me. When pregnant I can go a bit crazy, it's amazing.

DannyWallace · 12/10/2018 20:26

Thanks so much everyone ❤️❤️

@boodles101 I don't really know how to describe it. I guess it was kind of stabbing pains. But my whole stomach would become so huge, solid and painful (the only position that may ease things for me was hands and knees and that, with the huge belly, apparently made me look like I was in labour 😂). Turns out it was all my bowels and so I would often feel pain/spasming on my left side.
I hope you get some answers too.

I find it so interesting that this seems to have happened to so many of us.
I'm not going to go crazy, but I'm going to have some pizza 😀😀😀

I've been thinking this myself the past couple of weeks! Haven't eaten gluten for over 3 years due to bad IBS and intolerance. I've been feeling great since being pregnant and have been craving gluten! I ate a croissant the other day (first time in years) and feel totally fine! So then ate some shortbread and all is well 😊 I'm now struggling to resist the urge to devour everything I've excluded for years! Dominoes pizza is calling me!...

boodles101 · 12/10/2018 20:50

Thankyou for your response. Glad you are feeling better during pregnancy! Guess I just need to go back to gp and discuss!

BackIntoTheSun · 12/10/2018 20:57

Have a pizza for me! I'm coeliac and would love to magically be able to eat gluten again!

Shruggy · 12/10/2018 20:58

I have lots of intolerances too and find no side effects if I cheat a bit when pregnant. Make the most of it I say and enjoy.

bedtimestories · 12/10/2018 21:00

I have several food intolerance, all changed with each pregnancy and now I'm able to have everything I reacted to before I was ever pregnant. I was advised it could happen

GinIsIn · 12/10/2018 21:01

I feel so cheated. Gluten still made me vomit when I was pregnant. I JUST WANT ONE WHITE BREAD BACON SANDWICH!!

overagain · 13/10/2018 08:00

I find my intolerances worse when pregnant but they go completely when I'm on cerezette pill (but no other pill). Enjoy it whilst you can!
