The 3rd early ultrasound too much??

Hey ladies,

I'm 9 weeks now. I was in another country when I found out that I was pregnant. I went to doc there and was sent to ultrasound at 5 weeks. They barely saw anything and told me to come in two weeks and not travel till at least 8 weeks. So I couldn't come back home. So I came again to ultrasound. I heard the heartbeat and that was uffff the relief. But both times I had a period pain after the procedure.

I came back finally to the Netherlands where I live.
The problem is the midwife here wants me to have ultrasound AGAIN in a week. "To see my due date".

And frankly speaking I am freaking out. I have just read about harm that may be caused by early ultrasound. And I did already twice.

Omg. Sorry I am so anxious about it.
Could you please share your thoughts about this situation. What do you think about early checkups

Please try not to worry! It will be fine. I had 2 early USs in my first two pregnancies as I’d had IVF and the clinic scanned at 5 and 7 weeks. I really doubt IVF clinics would do anything to put early pregnancies at risk. I’m in Germany and have had USs every 4 weeks throughout and now every 2 weeks after 30w.

Ultrasounds are entirely 100% safe - that's why they're used!!! There are no risks to the pregnancy.

I've had 5 scans so far and only 24 weeks.

PBobs · 12/10/2018 04:23

I had one at 5. Will have another at 7 and then again at 12. It'll be fine. Ultrasound is safe.

LiquoricePickle · 12/10/2018 05:14

I'm eleven weeks, I've had two and I'll have another one next week

kikibo · 12/10/2018 05:46

Also Germany here: I went at 4 weeks (for sickness meds) and had one, then at 6 and 8 weeks. I personally wasn't fussed about this, as my ob couldn't really have done much, had it gone wrong, but he insisted.
Since then, I have had one every month and now every other week. Is fine. They wouldn't if it could harm.

I was concerned about this and had lots of ultrasounds. Some very long where i could feel my stomach getting warm from it.

I did some research and discussed it with the sonographers and apparently there isnt really an issue as the scans are so short. I would try not to worry. If there was a danger you wouldnt be offered one and due to the nature of my pregnancies i have also seen research into the more care you receive the better chances of a good outcome.

@chloechloe thank you❤️ I also want to trust the clinic.

@hoping2018 there are no researches that prove 100 % safety.
Anyway I need to stop googling every tiny thing otherwise I will go mad.
Thank you for your support

@kikibo thank you!
How do you feel now? Did it get better with the sickness?

I wouldn't worry, I would prefer the scans than them not scanning me! I had 4 before 13 weeks on NHS due to EPU.

hoping2018 · 12/10/2018 07:57

@gingerraspberrypie

Is there a Cochrane reviewed meta-analysis showing harm? If not, considering the millions of times it has been used in pregnancies throughout the world, then I am confident in ultrasound and would happily have a hundred in my pregnancy.

I honestly believe you are worrying about nothing - there are so many things you can fret about in pregnancy (mine is an ivf one so I do know what it's like to worry about everything) but I wouldn't worry about US!

Good luck with the pregnancy

hoping2018 · 12/10/2018 08:00

@gingerraspberrypie are you having transvaginal USS or trans abdominal?

ellesbellesxxx · 12/10/2018 08:03

I had twins so high risk pregnancy and had growth scans regularly as they couldn’t measure bump reliably. I think I must have had at least 12 scans from 6w through to 35w! They are fine :)

ToesInWater · 12/10/2018 08:29

I had many ultrasounds due to a history of miscarriage and a series of unfortunate events in early pregnancy with DS that you probably won't believe if I listed them! No dramas, no issues with the kids. Congratulations on your pregnancy and stop googling 😂

kikibo · 15/10/2018 12:34

@ginger Well, things weren't so bad this time. I had dreaded it, but in fact, whereas with DD the sickness hit like a bus at 5 weeks, this time it gently built up, peaked at around 8-10 weeks and then tapered off to nothing. I still sometimes threw up (without the sickness, it's weird), but it had completely cleared by 16 weeks tops. With DD I still felt sick in the mornings before breakfast well past 20 weeks (diabetes test would only have been just about possible, though I negotiated just a blood test after breakfast for that; I would have point blank refused one on an empty stomach).
Saying that, the sickness meds were just those against travel sickness. And they send you to sleep, so it was a choice between dozing off or feeling awful. So I only took them when really desperate. I mainly wanted a prescription because pharmacists here won't give you anything if they hear 'pregnant', but I wasn't in a position anymore last time to sit in a waiting room or to get to my ob (not in a car and not on foot). Still, if I had felt too rough for any appointment I'd have told the midwife to come and measure my BP at home or otherwise have cancelled altogether until further notice...
