Essential oils in pregnancy? Help!

I’m 7 weeks into my 2nd pregnancy (I know I should know more 🙈). I’ve been really badly sick and since Saturday have had the worst migraine and it just won’t go away at all. I’m finding it so diblitating and can’t do anything, including entertaining my poor 2 year old.

Today I got a natural remedy from the local health store that has grape seed oil, orange, eucalyptus and marjoram in it and it has actually given me some relief. I’m feeling better than I have for days.

But my SIL has just called in and told me that I shouldn’t be using any essential oils in the first trimester. I’ve googled but can’t really get a clear answer. Does anyone know if this is true?! I honestly can’t go for the next few weeks with no relief from this Sad

It's safe to take paracetamol.

Why not just see your doctor. You can take Paracetamol for the headache. Essential oils might make you feel nice but they are not tested to the same standards as medications are. Just because they are "natural" doesn't make them safe.

I’ve seen my doctor. I was told to limit the amount of paracetomal I take in the first trimester. Also it’s migraine rather than a headache, paracetamol does little to help. My doctor said it was dehydration but I’ve been drinking huge amounts of water and still no difference. Thanks for answering.

Essential oils can be used but the concentration in carrier oil should be less than 2%. Instead of dermal application, why not try some oil in a diffuser or put some on a cotton wool pad and tuck it in your bra? Peppermint is very soothing for headaches.

Some essential oils should never be used in pregnancy.

smallplainblonde · 10/10/2018 21:54

Thank you idontknow I will try that.

Hi, I qualified in aromatherapyany years ago, but interest has kept me updated with research.
Does the label have the Latin names? There is a slightly obscure Spanish marjoram ( thymus masticgina in Latin) which has a low non proven risk in pregnancy. That means that someone has looked at the constituents and thought” This could threaten pregnancy” rather than there have been any cases observed of it affecting a pregnancy. What is generally called marjoram in the uk( origanum majorana ) is safe.
Pm me if you need to .

The rest are completely safe.

Fellow migraine sufferer in my first pregnancy...I have resorted to paracetamol, water/coconut water if I'm dehydrated from being sick or lucozade sport, 4head roll on, and an ice pack...

smallplainblonde · 10/10/2018 22:08

ohyes, thank you so much. I will look at the bottle soon and check for Latin names. That’s really helpful.

user, you have my sympathy. It’s so hard isn’t it? I’ve been using ice packs too which definitely help. Hope you feel better soon.

They say not to use essential oils as it can induce an early labour, even some radox bubble bath stuff can encourage labour and not to be used in pregnancy

I found some music on YouTube by searching for 'migraine relief music'. It has some sort of 'tone' that is supposed to work on migraine frequency and cancels it out (apparently! ). It does sound a bit daft but I find it helps reduce the severity of the migraine enough to let me get through the rest of the day at work (I sit in front of a computer all day). It seems to work better if I use headphones. I'm 14 weeks pregnant and can't use the usual painkillers either. Hope you find some relief for your migraines
