75mg aspirin a day? Anyone else?

2nd pregnancy (11 years apart) and Ive been told to take aspirin everyday because my mum had pre eclampsia with me?(28 years ago) She didn't have it with my little sister....

Anyone else been advised to do this? I still haven't bought any and also don't like the thought of taking it every day! They say I'm high risk? But I really don't see how 🤷🏽‍♀️

There is a lot of pushing of aspirin lately!

I was told I needed to take aspirin this pregnancy (3rdh) due to being at risk for small babies... my first was a twin pregnancy and they were born at 36 and weighed 4lbs each.. which is not unusual for twins at that gestation. My second pregnancy was born at 8lbs, therefore I don't consider myself at risk for small babies.

I used my brain and decided not to take it and my midwife supports this decision.

Perhaps you could benefit from some further conversations with your midwife to look at your situation as an individual case as opposed to a tick box exercise.

Xx

It's common to take aspirin in pregnancy, I did with all of mine due to lots of miscarriages and I believe IVF pregnancies often have aspirin prescribed.

Uncreative · 10/10/2018 07:43

Me!

Actually, the recommendation in the country I am currently in is 150mg. It is a PITA as you can only buy aspirin in 100mg and 300mg here. I was told that aspirin deteriorates very quickly and I must not use the half pills.

You may not have a high risk pregnancy per se. Instead, it may be that you are considered at high risk specifically of pre eclampsia.

Aspirin has been proven to reduce the risk of pre eclampsia.

Aspirin lowers the risk of pre eclampsia by about 15% so they recommend women with risk factors take it. You don't have to obviously and since the reduction is relatively small, you wouldn't be putting yourself at a massive risk by not taking it. However, just think through the reasons you don't want to. Pre eclampsia is very serious.

Fwiw I was also told to take it because of family history. I did and have ended up with gestational hypertension (about half of women with this will develop pre eclampsia) anyway.

BlueBug45 · 10/10/2018 09:20

@leamaria you should always ask the person who tells you to take aspirin when you should stop. It is normally at 36 weeks as term is 37 and that gives you enough time so you can go into labour without bleeding.

SquigglePigs · 10/10/2018 09:22

Yes, I've been taking it all the way through (31 weeks now) as my blood pressure is at the top end of normal when I'm not pregnant so higher risk.

Daisy2990 · 10/10/2018 09:32

I'm taking soluble aspirin -- like you I didn't take it in my first pregnancy and nobody mentioned that I might need to. My first baby was 9lb 3 so it's not about small baby risk for me, it's about the pre-eclampsia risk.

I don't much like taking it though. It seems to have prolonged my nausea and I also get blood in my vomit if I take the aspirin after a certain time of day. I've told about 6 different healthcare professionals about how miserable it's making me, but nobody really seems to care.

If you've been advised to take it then it's probably better to, although I've skipped days to give myself a break from the vomiting and the sky hasn't fallen in yet. Touch wood!

Daisy2990 · 10/10/2018 09:33

BTW be careful buying it in shops, I was prescribed 75mg which is difficult to find. Most supermarkets sell 300mg.

LilacIris · 10/10/2018 09:38

I’m taking 150mg per day and the consultant said it would help to strengthen the placenta.

NotSoThinLizzy · 10/10/2018 09:45

I was prescribed it for my 2nd baby as I had pre eclampsia with my 1st. But I'm allergic to aspirin so didn't take it and it was fine. Thank the lucky stars

Bluebelltulip · 10/10/2018 10:13

I wasn't told to take it with my first pregnancy dispite my mum having pre eclampsia in all of her pregnancy most severe with me. This pregnancy I have been told to take it as on top of the family history my DD was born on the 5 th centile.

Vuduvu · 10/10/2018 15:14

I’m taking it - 75mg a day - as I’m an FTM and my mum had pre-eclampsia

Rarfy · 10/10/2018 15:18

I'm on it following a stillbirth. I have no side effects other than bleeding gums when i brush my teeth not long after.

Also on 75mg. Savers and poundtstretcher stock them if anyone is looking for stockists.

Not sure why you wouldn't follow medical advice to be honest, especially if it may help you avoid something has dreadful as pre-eclampsia. Didn't you ask the midwife why you were classed as high risk?

Is there a reason you don't like the thought of taking it? Why not at least try it and see if you experience any side effects.

BlueBug45 · 10/10/2018 21:00

OP worth checking with your midwife, or even your GP if you cannot get information from your midwife.

In my area if you have 10 or more years between pregnancies you are categorised as high risk as well as the other expected factors of having family history of preeclampsia, etc.

Worieddd · 10/10/2018 21:31

150mg is now the recommended amount.
I’m on it too. I’ve had a stillbirth and a premature baby.

dreamyflower · 10/10/2018 21:54

I'm on 75mg a day due to pre-eclampsia in first pregnancy. Due a csection at 39 weeks. Am 35 now but haven't been told to stop taking it.

Uncreative · 10/10/2018 22:49

My doctor said that she would tell me to stop taking it one week before I am induced.

doodles1234 · 10/10/2018 23:14

I have been taking it since 13 weeks, my mum had pre eclampsia and so did my sister so bad she nearly died.

So they have deemed so high risk I will not be allowed to go past 38 weeks and after my 20 week scan will need to have my blood pressure taken every week.

If they have perscribed it, it must be for a reason (well that's what i thought) so have been taking it since.

hanny24 · 10/10/2018 23:44

Thanks everyone. I did buy some 75mg today from Asda pharmacy.

The reason why I don't particularly want to take it is because I don't like the thought of taking a pill everyday, It's not that I can't swallow them or don't like them, it's just the fact of putting something into my body that I just don't think I need.

The only reason I've been told to take it is because my mum had pre eclampsia, that's it. I have no other medical reasoning behind it 🤷🏽‍♀️

BlueBug45 · 11/10/2018 00:33

OP the current research on it is that it does far more good than harm and there is a very low risk of side effects.

Your mum having preeclampsia means you are more likely to get it. However I don't know the statistics on it as I was told to take it for different reasons.

LemonLadybird · 11/10/2018 01:35

Was on 75mg since I found out, had 2 miscarriages before that. Told to stop taking it at 36 weeks. Think it's what saved my baby as I didn't take it with my other two pregnancies. Also at risk for PE.

(My 4 month old is currently snoozing on my chest FWIW) Smile You'll be absolutely fine.
