6 weeks pregnant and high blood sugar - being tested for diabetes. Anyone had this?

Hi

I'm 6 weeks pregnant and went to the Drs today to test for a UTI - they finger prick checked my blood sugar at the same time after seeing it was quite high in the urine test and it showed up as being 16.4mmo - no idea what this means but I assume that it was high as I then had a proper blood test, get the results tomorrow.

Has anyone else experienced this - could it be a one off? I did a quick google and now I'm terrified I will miscarry or cause damage to the embryo by not knowing sooner.

Thanks

Hi, can't help on your current situation, but I do know they do this test at 28 weeks. I have mine on Monday, glucose test. Standard procedure to have the test to check mum to be for pregnancy diabetes.
They have found it really early in your case.

If you have it that is. Wait until your results tomorrow. You could be panicking over nothing.

You might just have had a high amount of sugar today. It doesn’t necessarily mean you will have GD. I’m sure the midwife will arrange a GTT regardless to confirm either way.

Managed well, GD is an inconvenience, with a few increased risks but you will be under a consultant for extra care if that is the case.

Not in my area, they only test you if you have risk factors (obesity etc) or symptoms such as sugar in the urine.
OP if you have it then 6 weeks is actually really early to find out. It could be a one off, or could be gestational diabetes. Better to find out sooner!

Had my results through - looks like I have had type 1 diabetes without knowing it for a while. Really unsure what this means for the pregnancy - seems to be very unusual!

They will monitor you carefully. And as for a PP thank you for correcting me, maybe I'm getting tested because my dad has type 2 diabetes, as I did mention it at my first midwife appointment.

Sorry to hear you've had the news that it looks like T1 diabetes OP. My DH was diagnosed Type 1 in his 30s so I know it must be a shock, and even more so coming during pregnancy. Hopefully they're already getting things moving quickly to get your blood sugar levels under control.

It might be worth posting on the diabetes board here if you've not already, you're probably more likely to get responses from people who have experience of T1 in pregnancy.

That's great that it's been caught now and especially so early in your pregnancy though. T1 is big learning curve but it won't take long for you to get used to the new norm and if it's latent onset they might be able to treat it with medication initially before you need to start on insulin.

Thank you! That’s really nice to hear, I’ll check out the other board. Hope your DH got things under control quickly!

He did! It's all just part of his routine now. Best of luck xx

In the end, did you have to go on medication? What was the advice given? Hope you and baby are okay. Sorry to hear about your diagnosis
