Increased risk of Down’s syndrome.

I had a tfmr last year as my baby boy had Down’s syndrome. It was a horrible experience and I am now 13 weeks pregnant. I had my anomaly scan last week and the nuchal fold measured 1.2mm. I felt so relieved. It was much better news than the 5.5mm we had last year. I also had the blood test and am awaiting the combined results.

I saw a consultant today who told me that as I have had one baby with Downs that my chance of having another is higher than your average lady. I wasn’t aware of this at all and I’m now petrified at what the result will be. I know it’s going to come back high and I really don’t want to have the CVS test again.

Does anyone know if that is the case? I am already at a higher risk before we even start?

Thank you.

Woman I know had a ds with ds and had 3 nt dc after that.
Sure everything will be fine with that measurement, though its to be expected you will worry.

I also had a tfmr earlier this year due to downs and am now 16 weeks pregnant. They told me the chance of another pregnancy with downs goes up by 1% due to having had one already - so this is tiny.

If the nuchal fold is 1.2mm and everything else looked normal (nasal bone, heart etc) at the scan, you have a high chance of it being ok.

My risk came back 1:2,200 for this pregnancy - I really hope you get a low risk result too. Flowers

Thank you nightmanager. Congratulations on your pregnancy. Can I ask how old you are?

@ellehopeful I’m 39

@Ellehopeful you could get the Harmony? It's non invasive and very accurate. I had it at 10+4 to screen for chromosome problems. I also found out the sex of our baby. X

Thanks for the messages. I had my screening results back today as 1 in 700. They told me this was low risk but seems high to me. I’m 36 with a bmi of 30. Should I be looking at further testing?

I’m 25 mine came back nt 2.6 and with the bloods a 1:140 chance of down syndrome
I chose no further testing as it wouldn’t have made a difference and the miscarriage chance wasn’t worth it although only small risk I just couldn’t have done it
I gave birth to my baby boy yesterday and he is perfect 💙
Try not to worry

Can you afford the NIPT test privately? If so, I would do that. Just for peace of mind.

Sunshinegirl82 · 11/10/2018 14:02

My understanding of the NHS screening is that anything less than 1 in 150 is counted as low risk so you are low risk according to their criteria.

I knew that I would struggle to be comfortable with the results given out by the NHS and so opted for the Harmony test privately in my first pregnancy. Having had a low risk result on that I declined the NHS screening.

If you can afford the harmony then given your concerns I think I would go for it, if only just to try and set your mind at rest so you're not worrying for the rest of the pregnancy.

I’d be amazed if your baby has Down’s syndrome with that nuchal measurement. At 36, your odds are always going to be massively skewed by your age anyway.

Does you hospital offer NIPT? Under the circumstances, by which I mean your TFMR and peace of mind, they might waive the cost for you or offer it at a reduced rate to a private clinic.
