Severe Nausea - 8 weeks pregnant

I am 8 weeks pregnant and have had constant nausea since 5.5 weeks. I have had 2 weeks off work already and went back to work this week. I’m now off work again as the nausea has got so much worse. I constantly feel like I’m 3 seconds away from throwing up, from when I wake up until a go to bed, and any movement makes the nausea worse. I’m struggling to eat as it makes me feel worse but I know I have to. I can only manage really small amounts of food and I’ve definitely lost weight as my clothes are all too big! I am exhausted, weak and feel so incredibly helpless.

I feel so bad for taking time off work as I’m not physically being sick that much, but the 24/7 nausea is just horrific.

Anyone had the same and can offer any advice? I’m not sure about taking medication as my doctor has explained that there isn’t any that are proven to be safe. I’ve tried ginger, eating little and often, sea sickness bands and ice cold water etc and nothing helps!

I’m really hoping it goes by 12 weeks as I’m struggling so much!

Small and regular meals are your friend. So are carbs. My ob/gyn told me yesterday that you are less likely to throw up if you have food in your stomach. Thinking back, I have only vomited twice after eating, every other time has been bile/stomach acid because my stomach has been empty.

Is constipation a problem? That can be linked to nausea to so you might want to try something like movicol.

I still have morning sickness but have noticed it isn’t as bad if I have a banana for breakfast.

Hope you feel better soon. 💐

Your doctor is an idiot! I suffered with HG during my pregnancy and was admitted to hospital for dehydration and weight loss.. this far more dangerous for your baby.

There are many anti sickness tablets that are safe for pregnancy and suggest you seek a second opinion!

You do not need to suffer!

@kmreeve - I don’t have HG. Just regular morning sickness, as horrible as it is. There is a huge difference between the two and that is why the recommendations and treatment are different.

@em51 - I forgot to mention that I am now 10 weeks so the constant nausea is gone (only about 40% of the time now). I have a little bit more energy but still feel quite wiped out by mid afternoon. I’ve been told by others that week 9/10 are the worst for most women, so keep your fingers crossed that applies to you to. I’ve lost 4 kilos so far which was a huge surprise since I wasn’t able to do that pre-pregnancy (and I did try).

I had it horribly. Hospitalised twice in each pregnancy for dehydration. When I went back to work I had to give myself Metoclopramide suppositories and I also had it injected every morning at the surgery before I went to work. I still ended up vomiting all over one of my student's mother. Not fun.

You should be getting some medication - your doctor doesn't know what he is talking about.

Agree with above, your doctor is an idiot! I was on anti-sickness from 5 weeks with both my pregnancies, it didn’t get rid of it but it made it more manageable.
Unfortunately what works for on person doesn’t always work for another so you might find it helps to write down when you are sick and what you’ve been eating. For example I read mash potato was great but I realised after a couple of weeks that everytime I had it I was worse so had to knock that on the head!

Try and sip water throughout the day to stay hydrated so you don’t have to go into hospital for a drip.
Try not to worry about work, I’ve been of since October when I was 5 weeks. I suppose it depends who you work for but if you have a HR dept try and speak to them to explain and set your mind at ease.
It does get easier and it’s worth it in the end. I found breaking it down into smaller time frames like till next doctors, midwife appointment rather than due date helped me and I did what I could in bed. I made my daughter a mobile with little felt hearts because I could do basic sewing lying down. And I spent ages on Pinterest looking at all sorts of ideas for baby’s room, things I could make them. Just anything to kill the time till someone came home! Best of luck with your pregnancy x

Sorry you're feeling this way @em51 at least you can be reassured baby is doing well since you feel so shit!

Have you tried taking vitamin B6? It's shown to regulate hormones and is useful in pregnancy as the nausea is often caused by the influx of extra hormones from your baby! I'd take one of those a day (I think you can take up to 3 a day but check with a doctor!) and keep a sick bag in your area at work- it's gross to think about but at least you have somewhere nearby if you need too.

Also recommend keep eating, whatever you fancy as long as it's regularly and you don't get too hungry.

Good luck! X

@Uncreative the medicines used treat both HG and morning sickness- they are simply anti nausea medication. Dehydration and weightloss regardless of a HG diagnosis are still detrimental to both mother and baby.

Please be careful about your advice as it can scare people into not seeking help when it's needed.

Thanks for all your advice ladies.
I'm going to the doctors this afternoon to discuss anti nausea medication and hoping they give me something!

One of my colleagues is also pregnant and hasn't had any time off, but trying to remind myself that everyone's pregnancy is different!

I'm right there with you! Suffered hg in my last pregnancy and it looks like I'm headed that way again. Just been signed off for 4 weeks and it's a relief to know that at least I don't have to think about work. Im vomiting so often I can't drive or look after my ds alone; its really miserable. Just want to sleep the next few weeks away.
My ds was born very early at 29 weeks so they arent taking any chances this time and I'm on a couple of different meds. I knuw there's guilt surrounding medication in pregnancy but sometimes it's essential and the only way to stay alive; litereally.
Do what you need to do. As much rest as you can and eating and drinking what and when you can. Keep reminding yourself that this too shall pass, I promise.

Keep going to your GP/try a different doctor. I've tried 4 different medications and unfortunately nothing has worked but there are definitely options.

Also acupuncture can be good for sickness. Don't feel bad about being off work I have had horrendous nausea/sickness and have been off for a while. Even brushing my teeth makes me throw up most days!
