Gestational diabetes

Pre pregnancy I had a BMI of 21 , low carb, low fat, low sugar diet (1250 calories a day for over five years, I lost and maintained a nearly five stone weight loss) and went to the gym three times a week for high intensity cardio such as spin classes. This was all to stop me gaining weight and to manage symptoms, it's the only way I've found to effectively manage PCOS. I had put on about half a stone from my honeymoon, but wasn't worried as my usual regime would get rid of that sharpish.
When I found out I was pregnant I tried to keep going to the gym but it made me nauseous and light headed, I have been walking regularly at least fifteen miles a week, and was able to do some hiking on holiday. I've obviously had to increase my calorie intake and in all honesty I used it as an excuse to give myself a break. Not binging or anything, but if I wanted toast for breakfast is have it, sandwich for lunch fine, I stopped calorie counting but tried to stick mainly to non processed foods and have only had two take aways in the last seven months. I have allowed myself desserts and treats that I wouldn't have before. I have gained nearly four stone and have tested positive for gestational diabetes. I have diabetes on both sides of the family type one and two, and just feel gutted at myself for loosening the reigns and I'm worried about the impact this will have for my baby and birth. I don't have a specialist appointment until Monday, but when I told my midwife about the diagnosis her reaction was, ooh you must've been naughty ☹️. She also suggested I go for short walks, it feels like she just thinks I've been greedy and lazy.
As soon as I found out I've gone back to no/very low carb, no sugar, eating mainly protein and veg, but honestly I'm hungry and worried I'm now not eating enough for the baby.
Just wanted to hear other people's experiences of GD to try and stop the panic a bit.

I had my test yesterday and thankfully it came back negative! I was so anxious as like you I was low carb pre pregnancy.

As soon as I was pregnant though my diet turned into a total beige fest as couldn’t stomach meat or cheese or vegShock I pretty much lived on toast and digestives for the first trimester.

Aware that I was going to turn into a blimp but knowing I couldn’t stomach low carb right now I’ve turned to mindful eating and feeling much better and more in control.

I’m still the same weight at 24 weeks as I was at my 8 week booking in appointment. I don’t feel out of control now which is important.

It isn’t anything that you’ve done. It is your placenta being unable to process the glucose effectively (or something like that) and it can literally happen to anyone.

The history of diabetes in your family will have been the biggest factor. Don’t beat yourself up about it

Thank you both, I guess I felt a bit judged by the midwife and also that I've put on so much weight after being so careful for so long. Just got to fight the carb cravings and hope I can get my sugar levels down without insulin, midwife said this might not be possible as I was insulin resistant before pregnancy due to PCOS.

There is nothing you did that caused you to get gestational diabetes. If you manage your sugars you and your baby will be fine.

gestational diabetes is a bastard. I have it and some days are good and some are not so good. My baby and I are both doing well.

Sounds like your midwife is pretty tactless! Beating yourself up will do nothing positive, it will only make you feel bad. Just follow all the advice for the rest of your pregnancy. Good luck 😊
