Hi everyone

I’m 39 weeks 4 days pregnant today with my first. I’ve noticed that my underwear was a lot wetter than usual today but not sure what the cause is! I’m worried it’s amniotic fluid leaking but feeling there would be more if that was the case?

The wetness has soaked through my underwear but is only down one side. It hasn’t soaked through enough to touch my leggings, just the underwear. I tried to smell it as feel this would be the best way of telling but I really can’t tell what it smells like. This seems more watery than usual so not sure it could be discharge.

Basically is there any way of knowing for sure that it isn’t amniotic fluid? I know I could go and get it checked out but was hoping that there was a way to tell without having to do this.

Thanks!

When I thought my waters had gone with dd I phoned into the Labour ward and they asked me to come in wearing a maternity pad. They then checked over the next couple of hours if my waters were leaking. Turned out I had just peed. Blush

I think in Boots you can get pads which have a test strip in them which changes colour if amniotic fluid is leaking. I don’t know how reliable they are though.

They're not cheap!

@Stormwhale That’s what I’m worried about!

Those pads do look useful but definitely a bit pricey.

Surely if it’s fluid it will happen pretty often? Or am I just making things up now?

If it’s your ‘hind waters’, I believe the baby’s head can sort of plug the cervix and stop any fluid actually leaking out of your vag, but the membranes would still be broken and so the 24hr rule should apply.

Given your gestation, I think you should probably call for advice. It could well be labour! Good luck.
