Hi all

I am travelling end of next week for a short break to portugal. Can I buy a standard insurance deal or is there a specific one if you're preggers?

Thanks!

How many weeks are you? Most travel insurance cover provides cover for pregnancy complications as standard in early pregnancy. It gets more complicated in later pregnancy as you need to check if the baby is covered in case of premature birth.

I found Insure & Go very helpful. Had to get insurance for a cruise at 12 weeks and they cover pregnancy as standard, no need to declare and no extra premium. Obviously will depend how many weeks but I would look them up.

Thanks guys ..I will be 28 weeks when I fly out and come back.

Will check out Insure and Go.

In that case you should check the small print to make sure you and the baby are covered in case of premature labour/birth. I went away at 29 weeks and had insurance through Ravenhall who do a specialist policy, thankfully didn’t need it though! It cost me about £50 for a week in Greece (that included travel insurance for my partner as well).

Don’t forget to check airline policy as well - many airlines require a “fit to fly” letter from the GP or midwife from around 24 weeks onwards.

I flew to Canada and back at 18/20 weeks. We just got standard travel insurance - read all the small print and it covered pregnancy related complications. Our airline let you fly until 36 weeks, 36-38 weeks you needed a letter from your doctor, and after 38 weeks you couldn't fly, so check your airline's policy for that. And take your maternity notes with you, just in case.

just got insurance myself - flying when 27 weeks and coming back 30 weeks. go onto a price comparison site and check out as i just got it for a 3rd of the price of insure and go

eurochick · 04/10/2018 16:09

Do you have a fit to fly letter? Most airlines require one from 28 weeks onwards.

gruber · 05/10/2018 16:51

@wasthataburp I agree they may not be the cheapest but we needed specific cruise insurance to satisfy the cruise line & Insure & Go met all the criteria we needed and the cruise line wanted too.

My standard insurance said they would cover anything that arose from complications of pregnancy (but not preexisting) but not 'normal childbirth'. They defined normal childbirth as birth after 32 weeks. So if you had to cancel because of pre-eclampsia at any time, for example, that would be covered. And if you went into labour at 31 weeks so would that but labour after 32 weeks wouldn't be covered.

i used compare the market and got out a policy with Asda as i triple checked their T&C's and they cover pregnant related circumstances.

Just do a normal search (and btw pregnancy doesn't count as an existing medical condition, might be obvious to you but i wasn't sure myself!) then when you have your different quotes, just check their T&C's and there should be sections on pregnancy.

good luck!

I think most of them cover you when pregnant, up to about 32 weeks, but when I was pregnant I found the cheapest quote and then called them to ask them to confirm.
