Experience:big baby on scan - scared of birth

I'm currently 32 weeks with no2. The last 2 scans I've had have shown a big baby (2 diff consultants). 4 weeks ago Baby was measuring 2 weeks ahead. Today was measuring 3 weeks ahead.
I understand that these things are not reliable but I'd be lying to say having two now which both showed big Baby has me scared. I'm only little! Grin
My first was 7.5lb at 38 weeks (I was induced). Normal birth, no tears ... I can do this right ...?
Consultant said today if it looks like Baby is going to be much over 5kg they will start to talk about a c section Sad I really don't want one!

Things may change yet, C sections are really not that bad- I've had an emergency one after a long failed induction.

And as it is planned carried less risks.

Anyhow, you've got a while to go yet, and yes, the scans may not be accurate.

Look at it this way- your baby will come out either through the traditional route or less traditional route and you''ll be totally happy when its in your arms.

HippyChickMama · 04/10/2018 00:39

Growth scans really aren't that accurate. I had one with dd that estimated a birth weight of 9lb 12, she was born by VBAC at term weighing 8lb 8. Even if they do decide to do a section it's not that bad and an elective is preferable to an emergency.

Unsuitablelake · 04/10/2018 00:45

Dont worry about the scans. They said that my last one is going to be small(6-7). he was born 10.4 😂

whinetime89 · 04/10/2018 01:09

Describe big. My first they told me was huge and induced me at 37+3. She wasn't even 3kg Angry
Baby's 2 and 3 were 12/10 days over and were 3.8/3.7kg

confuddeledconfuddel · 04/10/2018 01:18

Thanks for the reassurance everyone

Omg @whinetime89 that's awful Shock I hope all was ok! How can they get it so wrong!

Baby is currently measuring just over 5lb (according to scan) Gestational diabetes has been ruled out.

I just have an irrational fear of a catheter Blush I also was so lucky and had a quick and easy birth with first even though I was induced at 38 weeks - recovery was even easier. I assumed it would be something similar. Blush that's what assume does - makes an ass out of u and me

@Unsuitablelake did you have a vaginal birth? How was it?

I nearly wish they just told me it was small and then I wouldn't be fearful and just push and keep believing it would be easy to birth. Although I'm sure they had you worried saying Baby was small

I asked to be induced at 37 weeks straight after a scan showed the baby was already 9lb. They were wrong as he was nine and a half pounds when he was born the next day. Planning an induction or csection may help you feel more in control.

confuddeledconfuddel · 04/10/2018 02:04

@PinkAvocado hmm didn't know I could request an induction ... was also hoping to avoid that this time but is probably the better of 2 evils Confused

Also worried how I'm gonna feed this monster baby Grin hope my milk ducts are up to the job!

What's wrong with a c section? I just had one for big breech baby and it was absolutely fine.

scrivette · 04/10/2018 02:24

I was told DD was already over 9lb and she was born the next day weighing 8lb 4oz.

DS was 9lb 6oz and Labour was easier than his 7lb brother so try not to worry too much.

With regard to feeding, just keep feeding and you will produce enough milk for the baby.

Aspenn17 · 04/10/2018 03:37

My ‘well over 9lb, probably closer to 10lb’ baby ended up being 8lb 2. And I was measuring 2 weeks ahead as well. So please don’t worry. Also the catheter fear, I had one and I honestly don’t even remember it going in. I was so distracted by my baby and everything else going on. Good luck x

ICJump · 04/10/2018 04:22

I’ve had two big babies. Both born vaginally with gas and air. Small tears but healed quickly.
The website evidence based birth has some great info on big babies

triwarrior · 04/10/2018 04:31

I was told that my son was measuring 11’4. He turned out to be 10lbs. Big but nowhere near what I’d been led to believe. Fret not.

voxnihili · 04/10/2018 07:45

I was told DD was 7.8 at 36 weeks. She was born at 40 weeks weighing 7.4. Her legs were measured shorter at 36 weeks than they were at 34 weeks.

OutPinked · 04/10/2018 10:10

I had three ten pounders. Pushed the last two out with no pain relief and they came out straight forward with little tearing. DC1 was shoulder dystocia and forceps with every pain relief going though. You can have a difficult labour with a seven pounder, size doesn’t necessarily mean it will be difficult especially since you’ve already had a child.

OliveOrTwist · 04/10/2018 11:14

My big baby at scans was born weighing 9lb15. At 32 week scan she qad3 estimated to be 5lb5. Labour progressed quickly though. Waters broke at 4.30am, first contraction shortly after, she was born 1pm.

rubyroot · 04/10/2018 17:25

Isn't it all about the head shape anyway?

There's nothing to be scared about re c section- certainly not an elective one.

When I was induced I begged to go straight to c section as I knew that was where it would end up.. and it did!

And after 12 hours of that god awful hormone and drip (after they had burst waters)- consultant finally came in and said baby is not in right position and we are going to have to operate- I am sorry.

I cannot tell you how relieved I was!

confuddeledconfuddel · 04/10/2018 18:32

@rubyroot see I had total opposite experience. I was induced and hind waters (what was left, as was reason I was induced) and she was born at 11pm on gas and air. Only scratches and not a stitch.

I think it's just the unknown with a c section. I was terrified of birth and being induced and now it's fine for me. The recovery after doesn't appeal, especially with a toddler who climbs all over me. As pp says though when baby is here it won't matter how they got here

I was absolutely shit scared of a c section!

But- it really is not scary and the recovery is not that bad. My friend managed with 3 under 4s (inc baby).

rubyroot · 04/10/2018 18:58

Anyhow- see how next scan is. I thought I would end up with a big baby as was measuring fairly big. I was a very anxious pregnant woman and worried about everything- convinced myself I had gestational diabetes and then later on got lower in the percentiles (had extra private scans).

confuddeledconfuddel · 04/10/2018 20:14

They have me back in 2 weeks again - so fingers crossed!
