Flu jab at 38 weeks

Hi all! I’m 38+1 today and when I saw the midwife this morning she told me about the flu jab as we're getting into flu season.
I was just wondering if there’s any point getting it now when I’m due so soon?
I’ve nothing against getting it and if I wasn’t so far on I wouldn’t be questioning it but it just seems a bit pointless now because of how far on I am.

Ooh I’m curious to know this too. Im 37 weeks and booked in for mine next week.

Stephisaur · 03/10/2018 21:50

It’s as much for you as it is for baby, so I would probably still get it in your shoes :)

No harm in being protected once the baby arrives!

Spam88 · 03/10/2018 21:53

Flu with a newborn would be pretty miserable, might as well get it!

sleepless19 · 03/10/2018 21:56

It will protect you now and once baby is born so yes would definitely recommend getting it!

Babyboymama · 03/10/2018 21:56

That’s a good point actually, I never thought about me getting it I thought it was just for while baby is still inside!
I got flu last year over Christmas and couldn’t leave my bed for almost 2 weeks so now you’ve made me think of that I’ll definitely get it! I couldn’t even look after myself so I don’t want it with a newborn.
Thanks for the help Smile

Does it offer any protection to baby or is it just to the mum?

AFistfulofDolores1 · 03/10/2018 21:58

I read that newborns have a very strong immune system, which gradually wanes over their first year.

I had mine at 38+6. DD was born 4 days later!

wejammin · 03/10/2018 22:02

I'm booked in for mine on Monday, I'll be 37+3. The midwife said for full immunity for baby the jab should be 2 weeks before birth, but anything is better than nothing and it will protect me as main carer, as I'm hoping to breastfeed that will also help.

DD and DS are both having the nasal spray soon so hopefully most of the house will be protected except DH and I'm pondering whether he should pay for one whilst we have a newborn.

Yes, it's for you as well as the baby. I wouldn't want to be hit with the flu whilst trying to care for a baby!

WLAH · 03/10/2018 22:15

Not pregnant but I got it yesterday.. and was told it takes 2 weeks to fully protect

Angelmiracle · 03/10/2018 22:20

I would rather go ahead and get it than not!

Pickles31 · 03/10/2018 22:38

Yes I had my midwife appt yesterday and booked in for mine on 18th October, I will be 37 weeks then :) better to be safe than sorry as I don’t fancy getting flu

Babyboymama · 04/10/2018 07:38

Thanks everyone! I’m going to ring today and get booked in for itSmile

It gives the baby immunity thatlasts after birth. Its for their benefit more than yours so i would.

Plus caring for a nb when you have flu would be horrific.
