Completely forgot to get whooping cough vaccine

I genuinely forgot and my midwife has gone AWOL recently.
I’m 37+4 today and my planned c section is booked for 39+4. I assume I’ve left it a bit too late now. I’m going to get there her flu jab but not until he’s here.

I would phone first thing in the morning and try to get it ASAP. Better to get it late than not at all.

Angelmiracle · 03/10/2018 17:48

You definitely still have time to get it!

CathyandHeathcliff · 03/10/2018 17:52

Oh ok, I thought it was between 28 and 32 weeks.

I think it's best in-between those weeks but better to have it late than not at all.

SpottingTheZebras · 03/10/2018 17:56

You can still get it and the flu jab beforehand - both jabs protect the baby after birth and you can have them done at the same time.

Bluebelltulip · 03/10/2018 17:56

Not relevant to you but for anyone else you can have it from 16 weeks.

Celebelly · 03/10/2018 17:57

Plus some antibodies are transmitted in breast milk, even if there isn't much time for it to cross placenta before birth, so it's definitely worth getting v not.

CathyandHeathcliff · 03/10/2018 22:05

Ok thank you. I just wasn’t sure it was too late.

I had my whooping cough jab at 34 weeks and no one said anything about it... Like PP said, ideally earlier, but still good later.

CathyandHeathcliff · 04/10/2018 11:31

I just called up and as usual the surgery is ridiculously busy. They can’t fit me in until next week and then there’s only a week until my c section. I’ve read it takes two weeks to reach the placenta effectively anyway Sad

Are they vaccinated as newborns?

OP posts:
Bluebelltulip · 04/10/2018 11:32

Babies are vaccinated at 8 weeks.

Celebelly · 04/10/2018 11:34

No, they aren't, which is why you're advised to get it while pregnant. They can't be vaccinated for a couple of month. I'd still get it (and maybe ask them to contact you in case of any cancellations) because as was said previously it will protect you and some antibodies will pass through breastmilk. You don't want to mess around with whooping cough! Maybe ask your midwife if she can pull any strings!

Celebelly · 04/10/2018 11:38

Also NHS says this: 'Babies born to women vaccinated at least a week before birth had a 91% reduced risk of becoming ill with whooping cough in their first weeks of life, compared to babies whose mothers had not been vaccinated.' so even a week has benefits.

CathyandHeathcliff · 04/10/2018 11:54

Ok thanks, I did try and get in earlier but that’s all they had. I’m now worrying what if he comes early Sad I feel like bad parent, even though it was a genuine mistake.

@CathyandHeathcliff your hospital might offer it. The antenatal clinic at mine has a walk in Whooping Cough and Flu Clinic. Worth a call
