Just moved area and consultant I saw today wants me to have a GTT as I have high levels of sugar in my urine (I always do in pregnancy but there we go). I'm having it tomorrow.

I've been told that once I've done my first blood test and drank lucozade (bleuuuuurrrrgh) I can disappear off and just come back after two hours for my second blood test. Dh has suggested we take ds swimming (well, paddling, if we can persuade him to get in the pool at all ) - but I'm wondering, am I likely to feel really sick and woozy after all that sugary drink?

errrrr i was told to take thinsg easy. as you have to fast from tonight. they take a fasting blood test, drink that foul-not-even-lucozade-drink, then (in this area) take blood at one hour later, then two hours later.

InternationalMouseOfMystery · 12/06/2007 17:33

i don't think the amount will make you feel rough

poor you though - i had to have one a few weeks ago, but i got to do the 'at home' one (ate specific breakfast then pitched up at gp's 2 hours later) - don't know why they don't let everyone do it that way - far less trsessful

I think I'm just squirming at the thought of drinking lucozade (and it is the real stuff, I asked ) - can't stand sweet or fizzy drinks, they make me feel sick!

Thanks folks.

I've had GTT done with both pregnancies and was told not to leave the building in between jabs and to sit and rest.Thought that was standard, but maybe it varies up and down the country.

goingfor3 · 12/06/2007 17:58

You are lucky if you get lucozade I had to drink glucose powder mixed with warm water. Bleugh!

rattleskuttle · 12/06/2007 18:03

when i had this done i was not allowed to even leave the room - i wanted to get my scan done while waiting but because it was on another floor of the hospital, i was told the activity could affect the result. i wonder if they were talking a lot of bo**ks

Tinkjon · 12/06/2007 18:12

Yes, you have to rest in between blood samples - exercise lowers blood sugar levels.
It seems like it's only me, but I like the gloopy sugar drink - after 7 months of avoiding sugar I'll take whatever sugar I can get

Hopeitwontbebig · 12/06/2007 18:26

I've got my GTT in 3 weeks, NOT looking forward to it. I wish we had the option in this area for doing it home/docs. Much better!

CorrieDale · 12/06/2007 18:29

They wouldn't even let me leave the waiting area outside the bloods room! Can see their point though - I am positive that my sugar levels in this pregnancy are so much lower than in the previous one because I've spent this one running around after an active toddler.

Miaou · 12/06/2007 20:52

How interesting - I have to say I was surprised when she said I could go out and about in between blood tests. Maybe I'll see how I feel!

Also, when you have a kid already, the idea of having nothing to do but sit and read a book for 2 hours is actually quite appealing

Miaou · 12/06/2007 21:52

I already have three Tinkjon , but IKWYM! I was just thinking of sloping off for a wee break on my ownsome but ah well

good luck with the gtt miaou

hope it doesn't make you feel too bleurgh

bananabump · 13/06/2007 08:03

When I had my GTT a few weeks back it wasn't a massive amount of lucozade, I think it was 100ml, just about one and a half of those little paper cups. If you chill it before you go it tastes a lot better (but I like lucozade)

In my experience they took the blood sample, gave me the drink, then told me to rest for exactly 2 hours in the waiting area, drinking only water if I needed to, then when 2 hours were up they took more blood and that was it. Wasn't so bad and I'm terrified of needles.

Weirdly, the appointment letter I got for my GTT said "bring one large bottle of lucozade or two small bottles" so I took along two small bottles. They took both off me, measured out the 100ml from one bottle, and at the end, gave me the remainder of the opened bottle back to take home. What happened to the full unopened bottle, eh? perks of the job?

wheniamqueen · 13/06/2007 14:28

i felt absolutly fine during mine, except really bored at being stuck in a very well lit room for 2 hours. I was told I go and come back, but i had nowhere to go so i didnt. I think they sometimes worry as you havent eaten for a while so might feel fait but tat depends on the person i suppose! and im very jelous of those who get to drink lucazade. The stuff i had looked like water and tasted foul!

Miaou · 13/06/2007 19:41

Well it went ok, though the lucozade made me feel very queasy! Took ds swimming which was a great success; he has previously refused to go in the water at all but today we managed to get him to go in (after 20 mins of roaring - but he wasn't scared, just trying to assert his authority over us ). Should get the results back fairly quickly - am expecting it to be clear
