Going home outfit for baby...

I'm packing my hospital bag as baby is due early November. It's likely to be a bit chilly and I have no idea what baby should wear home. Could anyone suggest or post a link to a warm all in one suit that would be appropriate for a brand new baby? The ones I look at look so thick and tough I can't imagine putting such a tiny baby in one! It's the last thing I need :)

I had a November baby and we just went with long sleeved vest, sleepsuits, cardigan, hat and a blanket tucked over her. This one is due in December and will do the same.

Rarfy · 01/10/2018 20:31

Im due january and planning on vest sleepsuit cardigan and blanket.

WishUponAStar88 · 01/10/2018 20:33

Completely agree with above! Nothing too thick/ puffy in a car seat as it’s not safe. Much better to have warm blankets on top of the seat belts. I did buy one of these blankets which are expensive but I found so useful ...

Snowsuits/pram suits aren’t supposed to be worn in car seats so I would say a long sleeved vest, a sleepsuit or relatively easy outfit of your choosing, maybe a knitted cardi, a hat and then just pack a couple of blankets to keep him warm.

I’ve got a lovely soft snuggly GAP sleepsuit for the winter that someone gifted us when he was born.

GuntyMcGee · 01/10/2018 20:34

If you're putting baby into a car seat for transfer home then don't put it into a snow suit. If you were in an accident the padding would compress and baby wouldn't be safe or stable in the seat.

Go for vest, babygrow, cardigan and then once strapped into the car seat cover with a cellular blanket folded over. Then add a hat. Once home, you can remove hat, blankets and cardigan.

sleepismysuperpower1 · 01/10/2018 20:36

what about something like this? with a cardigan?

CarlottiJames · 01/10/2018 20:37

Thank you so much! I had no idea about the snowsuit. So clueless but would like to think the midwives would've said something.

Off to buy a cardigan...

we had one of these super thin like micro fleece so good for the carseat. So good we had them in every size for both dc.

Put them over a bodysuit and sleepsuit then took off once home abd swapped for a little cardigan. Also good for walks out and wearing in the sling.

CarlottiJames · 01/10/2018 20:45

If I get bottoms, should I get newborn size or 0-3? I'm so clueless!

tuppenceandcrumble.com/shop/star_wraps these are amazing very thin fleece but keep them warm and snug xx

Hannahlouise4026 · 01/10/2018 20:54

I had a November baby 4 years ago, and we had lots of layers - vest, sleepsuit, knitted cardigan, then lots of blankets on top for in car seat

Hannahlouise4026 · 01/10/2018 20:55

As for sizes - my dd was 7lb2 oz and newborn was huge on her for the first week or so. We got some tiny baby (I think it said up to 5 or 7lbs from mothercare) Vests and sleepsuits. But for cardigans etc I wouldn’t bother going smaller than newborn size x

Celticlassie · 01/10/2018 20:56

DD was just under 8lb and her 0-3 clothes swamped her at first. Newborn was big but ok.

cholka · 01/10/2018 21:02

Will you be coming home by car? If so it'll only be a short walk from the hospital to the car then to your door - suit, vest, hat and cardy with a blanket over should be fine. I think that's what dd wore and it was minus 8 when we took her home.
The nurses checked her over in her car seat before we could leave to make sure we hadn't done anything completely silly right off the bat. That bit was fine but we got home about 7pm and had no idea what to do then. It's worth having an easy dinner in, nappy station set up, cot and bedding/spare clothes ready to go, muslins etc. Make a bag of what you'll need to keep on hand for when you get home. You may well be a bit tired and disoriented!

SoftSheen · 01/10/2018 21:05

Vest, sleepsuit, cardigan, newborn hat and a blanket or blankets, depending on how cold it is. Don't put a baby in a carseat wearing a pram suit. With blankets you can layer up when outside then remove layers once in the warm car (both my DC were winter babies!).

overagain · 01/10/2018 21:07

Be warned however that DC is very likely to know it's the designated going home outfit and do a massive poonami the second you put it on, just to ruin your plans!

beccii161016 · 01/10/2018 21:46

If take a mix of sizes from tiny baby - 0-3 just in case. My little boy was estimated as 8lb but arrived 6lb4 and he was short as well so we needed tiny baby (which we didn't have any of so he ended up buried in newborn haha lesson learned).

Eeeeek2 · 01/10/2018 22:31

My 7lb 9 ds was to long for newborn he went straight into up to 1 month size.

Make sure you have 2 going home outfits because guaranteed if you only have 1 it'll be covered in poo or sick just before you're about to leave.

ChocolateChipMuffin2016 · 02/10/2018 10:06

My DS was 8lb 3 and was in newborn for about 3 weeks! Then up to one month and "first size" for about a week! Then went to 0-3m in month 2 for 1 month! I was constantly buying clothes when he was tiny.
I'm not going to buy any up to one month this time. Was a waste IMO!

Rarfy · 02/10/2018 10:51

I did not knoe that about snowsuits and car seats. Glad im on the thread.

Love the little star wraps.

Another idea to add the velour sleepsuits always seem a little warmer. We had a gorgeous one from john lewis for our son.

OutPinked · 02/10/2018 13:37

Also due early November and I’m not used to having a baby born in a chilly month as my three DC were all spring/summer babies.

I’ve packed a few different options but I think he’ll be going home in a vest, baby grow and cardigan with a blanket over him. He won’t be outside for very long anyway, just the trip from the hospital doors to the car and driveway to house.

OutPinked · 02/10/2018 13:37

Also didn’t know that about snowsuits despite having three DC.

Justanewname · 02/10/2018 13:39

Frugi do a lovely hooded all in one made from sweatshirt type material that’s thin enough to use in a car seat. They’re called a snuggle suit.
