Anti-d

So I'm 23 weeks pregnant and had a pretty bad bleed last week. Both me and baby are absolutely fine but I had to have my first anti-d injection. Since I had it my arm that they injected has been really painful. It feels like I've got a constantly dead arm. I know that one of the side effects is muscle pain but thought I'd see if anyone else experienced the same thing at all?

I live in Spain so I don’t know if it’s different but I had mine in my bum, they said as it can be a painful injection it’s best to go in a meatier area of the body. I know a friend said hers was extremely painful but I can’t remember where she said she had it.

happymummy12345 · 30/09/2018 21:13

I had it. I felt exactly the same. My arm ached badly for a bit. It's normal I believe.

Mhcb · 30/09/2018 21:16

I had mines on Wednesday and my arm felt dead and sore until yesterday x

Verbena87 · 30/09/2018 21:23

Normal - ask for bum or thigh next time! (Ashamed to confess I was delighted my newborn was also o- so I didn’t have to have another after the various punctures and slices involved in childbirth)

gruber · 30/09/2018 21:41

Yep, I had my first one this week in upper arm and it was incredibly painful! Unfortunately this baby is + so I definitely have another 2 coming...

pastabest · 30/09/2018 21:47

Learnt the hard way not to have it in the arm.

the first time you are faced with the choice of arm, bum or thigh arm seems the logical and appealing option.

Then it doesn't.

Loyaultemelie · 30/09/2018 23:10

Yep go for bum! Luckily I was warned before hand with Dd1

happymummy12345 · 01/10/2018 17:08

@Verbena87 so was I, when they said my baby was negative I was so pleased. (Sorry if anyone thinks that makes me a bad mum, but after how bad that injection was, I was glad).

(I wasn't offered a choice either. Was told it was going in my arm. Mind you even with the pain I'd still choose the arm over anywhere else. At least they asked what hand I write with and made sure they used the opposite one, so small mercies).

TrashPanda · 01/10/2018 17:14

Yep, it's a sore one. Not a patch on steroids though, they're horrible. They do it in the meaty leg/thigh area as standard here.

I was also very pleased when my latest baby was rh- so I didn't have to have another injection.

funmummy48 · 01/10/2018 17:22

I had it in my bum, with both my pregnancies. I was earned that it would hurt but I never felt a thing! I think I must have had meaty buttocks.😮

PeonyTruffle · 01/10/2018 17:26

Another one adding to the, it really hurts in the arm chorus!

Was also super pleased that I didn't have to have it again after DS was born, I remember whispering thank you to him :)

motherofmenaces · 01/10/2018 17:45

I had this every time! When I had it with my latest pregnancy I had just had an injection in my other arm (can't remember if it was flu or whooping cough vaccine) and then suffered a small bleed so was given anti D as a precaution. I had two dead arms for days.
Not fun. Hope you feel better soon Thanks

TheChineseChicken · 01/10/2018 18:19

The worst injection I have ever had, and I'm pretty good with needles. Even after my c-section when I was drugged up to the eyeballs it still hurt like hell!

TinyMarie · 01/10/2018 18:23

Oh dear, I have to have my first one soon and am now scared! I may opt for the backside if I get the choice.

HannahMcHugh · 01/10/2018 18:36

Mine only hurt in the actual moment then i forgot all about it. Felt like she was injecting lava into my arm i nearly cried 😁

motherofmenaces · 01/10/2018 18:36

@TinyMarie Try not to worry, the injection itself isn't too bad. Its uncomfortable but not unbearable. It's painful a few hours later and again it's uncomfortable in a way that it's a bit numb but you forget about it then go to brush your hair or reach for something and then THAT is when it hurts Wink

TinyMarie · 01/10/2018 18:57

Thanks for the reassurance @motherofmenaces Smile
Pregnancy definitely makes you feel a bit like a pin cushion!

Anti D jab is really bloody painful. I'm no wimp but when I had it done in my arm it brought Beto tears and was agony for a couple of days. Every other one I've had in my bum cheek. Tons tons better.

Momma22 · 01/10/2018 23:28

I had one when I was pregnant and one the day after DD's birth, both in my arm. I had a bit of a dead arm too, nothing major though, as far as I can remember anyway? I don't remember it being any bigger or more painful than any other needle either? But my memory could be a bit fuzzy, had no idea you could have it in your bottom? I'm 10 weeks pregnant now, so when the time comes for my anti D I might opt to have it in my bottom too, lol.

doleritedinosaur · 01/10/2018 23:31

If they actually let the anti D get warm it doesn’t burn & is better in the leg.

New hospital won’t listen to me though & have to have it for a fifth time.
