Where do you change baby?

First time mum to be with silly questions!
As there is currently a great points promotion on Boots, I have placed an order for some bits and bobs, including a changing mat.
Then it occurred to me that I have no idea where to put it! What's the standard if you don't have a changing unit? Your bed? Kitchen table? Floor?

One in bathroom, one in room where baby sleeps, one behind the sofa. And a little basket with wipes/nappies/clean vest in each place too. Depending on size of your home obviously!

fruitpastille · 30/09/2018 12:47

Generally put on the floor or bed.

ButAIBUtho · 30/09/2018 12:57

On the sofa or the floor

When he was tiny it was on the dining room table.
Then it moved to the sofa.
Then to on his bed.

We had a mat in the living room until we realised that babies can projectile poo and wee while being changed. Had to borrow a carpet washer to clean up the mess. After that we only changed in the bathroom where everything was wipe clean.

Before DD was moving I’d do it on the bed (with a mat) and once she was rolling I’d do it on her bedroom floor with the mat with all the changing stuff in a box in that room

OutPinked · 30/09/2018 13:09

All of the above, wherever is most convenient.

octoberfarm · 30/09/2018 13:12

We have a dresser in the baby's room, so we have the changing mat permanently on top of that with wipes and nappies within reach, and then a sort of makeshift version downstairs too.

sittingonacornflake · 30/09/2018 13:15

The safest place to change baby is the floor as if you change them on a raised surface such as a table there is a chance they can roll off, fall to the floor and hurt themselves.

Bubblysqueak · 30/09/2018 13:17

We had a shelf under the coffee table in the living room with changing mat, basket of wipes etc and would change on the living room floor.

Foodylicious · 30/09/2018 13:18

Mat and basket with supplies (including nappies, wipes, cream, clothes, muslins etc) upstairs and downstairs.

Also old flannels or inserts from cloth nappies are great to cover baby with for a few seconds when you take off nappy and lift up legs to wipe bottom. Stops the wee going everywhere.
Weeing is a cold/naked bum reflux that does go eventually Grin

Floor for us.

DS far too active now to change on the bed.

We have 2 changing stations: Upstairs hallway where we get ready for bath and bedtime.
Downstairs lounge - changing mat, wipes, bags, creams and nappies all kept in one area (where DS can't get his hands on it all).

That's all we need.

leighdinglady · 30/09/2018 13:26

On top of a chest of draws with nappies etc in the top draw. Once she starting rolling over and wriggling we moved to the floor

MaverickSnoopy · 30/09/2018 13:29

We have always had a changing table in their bedrooms, which has worked well. Also change nappies downstairs by fetching things out of the changing bag and then change on the floor or sofa. Tbh the changing bag thing is a bit cumbersome so I've got a pretty box for our third and filled it with mat, wipes, nappies, muslins, cream and nappy bags. Will be adding some vests though - what a good idea!

randomsabreuse · 30/09/2018 13:37

Any fully wipable floor is easiest! We put a mat in our ensuite shower (largest floor space in that room) and in downstairs bathroom

Mumstheword1987 · 30/09/2018 14:28

Changing mat on the floor

Foodylicious · 30/09/2018 14:40

Oh and old hand towels for each changing mat so they are not on cold plastic and the towel is longer than the mat so protects the carpet/bed a bit too

anotherangel2 · 30/09/2018 14:43

On top of dining table (EMCS caught me unawares) or changer onto of then cot. When I was healed on the floor.

Thesnobbymiddleclassone · 30/09/2018 14:45

I've always just put it on the floor!

welshweasel · 30/09/2018 14:56

Changing mat on floor downstairs and on bed upstairs.

Angelmiracle · 30/09/2018 15:17

Across my knee easiest way of changing a nappy. But kept portable changing mat handy for DH and explosive nappies Grin

SputnikBear · 30/09/2018 15:20

If you do go for a changing table, keep it away from the cot. I remember an awful story in the news a few years ago where a baby reached the changing table from his cot and choked to death on plastic nappy bags.

niknac1 · 30/09/2018 15:21

Floor for safety and hygiene using a changing mat, I had one place with everything there. Even in shops etc I preferred to use the mat in my changing bat as I was very worried about my children falling off the changing station.
